His life trajectory is an industrial growth story armed with technology as blade and perseverance as bone, and a genuine footnote to Chinese industry's upward breakthrough on the global stage. From having nothing to building a vast industrial territory, from facing widespread doubt to achieving global recognition, Wang Chuanfu has demonstrated through action what long-termism means, and what an industrialist's responsibility and accountability entail.
Youth in Adversity: Education as the Only Light
Wang Chuanfu was born in 1966 into a poor rural family in Wuwei, Anhui. In an era of material scarcity, mere survival was difficult — and fate's tests for him were far harsher than for most. At 13, his father died of illness, and the family lost its most crucial pillar. Just two years later, his overworked mother also passed away. Both parents gone, the 15-year-old Wang Chuanfu became a completely orphaned youth overnight, plunging into life's darkest phase.
In life's most difficult and helpless moment, his elder brother and sister-in-law resolutely stepped forward to care for him. Despite their own meager circumstances, they scrimped, saved, and borrowed from everywhere to keep Wang Chuanfu in school, unwilling to let family tragedy interrupt his education. Those dark days taught him life's hardships far earlier than his peers, and made him understand with absolute clarity: education was his only way to change his fate.
He became exceptionally restrained, mature, and disciplined. He buried all grievances deep inside and poured every ounce of energy into study. Diligent in class, burning midnight oil after, never missing a single opportunity for improvement. Poverty did not break his will — it strengthened his inner refusal to surrender. Through years of dedication, Wang Chuanfu completed his studies, earned a master's degree, and entered the Beijing General Research Institute for Non-Ferrous Metals, becoming a deputy director while still young — holding the coveted "iron rice bowl."
Through prolonged immersion in battery technology, he witnessed firsthand how domestic battery industry was locked out by foreign technology blockades and high pricing. Foreign companies held dominant positions through core technology advantages while domestic enterprises remained in passive follower roles. A seed of industrial patriotism, self-reliant breakthrough, and monopoly-breaking quietly took root — laying crucial groundwork for his later decision to abandon stability and plunge into entrepreneurship.
Breaking Through Technology Blockades: Chinese People Must Make Their Own Batteries
In the 1990s, the global rechargeable battery market was dominated by foreign companies. Core technology was tightly sealed, critical equipment and materials were heavily import-dependent, and domestic enterprises were perpetually constrained, with limited room for development. Witnessing this, Wang Chuanfu was filled with determination. He believed firmly: Chinese people could create their own core technology and claim their place in the global industrial landscape.
In 1995, he resolutely resigned from his stable research institute position. With support from his cousin Lu Xiangyang, he secured 2.5 million RMB in startup capital and founded BYD in a simple workshop in Shenzhen, launching the path of independent battery R&D and production. Early conditions were extraordinarily harsh — small team, tight funding, crude equipment. Facing technology walls erected by foreign capital, there was virtually no mature path to follow. But Wang Chuanfu did not retreat. He held one conviction: breaking monopoly through quality and pragmatism, forging a path through technology and persistence.
He led the team in working around the clock in the workshop, repeatedly experimenting under limited conditions, continuously optimizing processes, pursuing a pragmatic approach that strictly controlled product quality and production costs — forging a development path suited to Chinese manufacturing. Through relentless technical assault and quality commitment, BYD batteries quickly gained market recognition, progressively breaking the long-standing foreign monopoly, establishing firm footing in the domestic market, and gradually opening international markets. In 2002, BYD listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. Enterprise scale and industry influence steadily increased, growing into a globally influential rechargeable battery company — laying solid financial, technical, and brand foundations for the later cross-sector move into automobiles.
Withstanding Endless Doubt: Quietly Guarding the New Energy Future
In 2003, while the battery business was steadily ascending with broad prospects, Wang Chuanfu made an industry-stunning decision: cross into automobiles, building cars that were truly Chinese. The announcement triggered a storm of skepticism and opposition. Almost nobody believed in the move. Many viewed the leap from batteries into the more technically complex, capital-intensive, and longer-chain automotive industry as extremely high-risk with minimal chance of success.
But Wang Chuanfu possessed a judgment and conviction ahead of his time. He saw clearly: energy transformation was the tide of the era; new energy was inevitably the automotive industry's future. In the gasoline-car era, China's auto industry started late with a weak foundation, perpetually in pursuit mode. But on the new energy track, Chinese automobiles had a precious opportunity to change lanes and achieve breakthrough. He refused to miss this historic opportunity — and hoped to explore an entirely new development path for China's auto industry.
That same year, he acquired Xi'an Qinchuan Automobile Co., Ltd., formally obtaining complete vehicle production qualifications and entering automotive manufacturing. The initial car-making journey proved far more difficult than imagined: lacking whole-vehicle manufacturing experience, low brand recognition, and mediocre early model market performance — pressures mounted from all sides. It wasn't until the 2005 launch of the BYD F3, with its mass-market positioning and exceptional value-for-money, that the company truly gained consumer recognition, becoming a market hit and establishing BYD's firm foothold in the auto market.
While fuel vehicle business developed steadily, Wang Chuanfu consistently maintained a future-oriented strategy. He withstood internal operational pressure and external skepticism, continuously investing heavily in new energy technology R&D, silently building full-chain core capabilities in batteries, motors, and electronic controls. During the long years when the new energy market had not yet exploded and the industry remained in early stages — even facing heavy investment, slow returns, and widespread incomprehension — he never wavered. No excuses, no restlessness, no surrender. He always believed: technology and time would ultimately deliver the fairest answer.
Technology as Foundation: Taking Chinese Cars to the World
As the new energy vehicle market gradually matured and the industry entered rapid development, BYD — with years of technology accumulation and full-industry-chain deployment — entered a phase of explosive growth. Blade Battery, DM-i hybrid, and other self-developed core technologies were successively launched and applied to mass-production models. Product safety, practicality, and competitiveness continuously improved while market scale expanded steadily.
According to public corporate data, BYD's new energy vehicle sales reached 3.0244 million units in 2023, maintaining a leading position in the global NEV market and becoming a Chinese auto brand with global influence. Full-chain self-research and self-production capability gives BYD significant advantages in supply chain stability and cost control, enabling more accessible pricing to reach broader consumer groups, truly bringing new energy vehicles into thousands of households, and accelerating industry adoption.
Meanwhile, Wang Chuanfu steadily advanced brand elevation strategy, launching the premium brand Yangwang, showcasing Chinese automotive achievement in cutting-edge technology to the world. Yangwang U8's emergency water flotation function dramatically improved vehicle safety in extreme scenarios, attracting widespread market attention. Yangwang U9's professional track testing performance demonstrated to the world the technical capability and innovation heights of Chinese new energy vehicles, breaking foreign brands' long-standing barriers in high-end performance.
Thirty Years of Perseverance: Writing the Industrialist's Vision
From impoverished orphan to corporate navigator, from battery sector breakthrough to new energy vehicle deep cultivation — Wang Chuanfu has spent nearly thirty years walking a solid, determined, powerful path of industry. Low-key, pragmatic, focused — he does not chase short-term traffic or buzz, is not obsessed with external praise or criticism. He consistently does what is right for the long term, placing technology innovation at the core, weaving perseverance and deep cultivation into the enterprise's DNA.
His experience is both a vivid portrait of personal struggle against all odds, and a microcosm of Chinese manufacturing's journey from catching up, to running alongside, to gradually leading. From breaking foreign battery monopoly to leading Chinese new energy vehicles onto the global stage, Wang Chuanfu has always maintained industrial patriotism as his original aspiration and technological self-reliance as foundation, injecting confidence and conviction into Chinese manufacturing through concrete action.
