In 1993, Huawei reached a critical strategic inflection point. Ren Zhengfei wagered most of the company's annual revenue, leading the team in an all-out assault on the C&C08 digital program-controlled switch. From that point, Ren Zhengfei established Huawei's iron rule: core technology must remain firmly in your own hands. He insisted on investing over 10% of annual revenue in R&D every year. Over the past decade, cumulative R&D investment has exceeded 1.249 trillion RMB. In 2024, R&D expenditure reached 179.7 billion yuan, over 20% of revenue. Global valid patents surpassed 150,000. HiSilicon chips, HarmonyOS, Ascend computing power, the "backup plan" — these hardcore deployments together form Huawei's core confidence for withstanding external risks and competing globally.

Facing comprehensive extreme sanctions from the United States — chip supply cuts, supply chain disruptions, market restrictions — Huawei encountered unprecedented external pressure. Pessimistic voices and doubts proliferated; many predicted Huawei would collapse. In this extraordinary crisis, Ren Zhengfei maintained composure and restraint: no complaints, no capitulation, no emotional provocation. He led the team in quiet, determined work, pushing technology breakthroughs and supply chain self-reliance.

Under immense pressure, Huawei not only retreated but continued breaking through in 5G, intelligent computing, digital energy, and other core domains — responding to suppression with concrete results, demonstrating the backbone and resilience of Chinese enterprises through steadfast resolve. This years-long breakthrough under pressure is not merely one company's survival battle, but a significant microcosm of China's technology industry shifting from passive follower to active leader.

V. Vision and Distance: Rejecting Glamour, Holding Fast to Long-Termism

Throughout his life, Ren Zhengfei has been low-key and reserved, rarely appearing in public, always placing himself behind the enterprise and team. His personal shareholding is under 1%; he has distributed the vast majority of equity to frontline employees, truly practicing "employee-first" philosophy. Huawei insists on remaining unlisted, refusing capital manipulation and short-term profit-seeking, wholly dedicated to real industry and core technology.

Even at the industry's summit, he maintains an austere style — uninterested in fame, averse to the spotlight, all his energy focused on enterprise survival, technology breakthroughs, and industrial futures. In a business environment obsessed with traffic and speed, this focus, restraint, and long-termism have enabled Huawei to traverse industry cycles and navigate volatile global competition with stability.

From desperate entrepreneurship at 43 with nothing, to leading Huawei into a global technology benchmark; from technology perpetually controlled by others, to forging a path of self-reliance — Ren Zhengfei has used thirty-seven years to write an entrepreneurial epic for Chinese businesspeople. Through hardship he forged resolve; through persistence he built legacy; through vision he charted the course.
