Wang Cen was born into a scholarly family — father an economist and early advocate of China’s capital markets, mother a mezzo-soprano singer. [9] He studied in the UK, US, and Canada, earning a bachelor’s in engineering and a master’s in finance, and holds CFA designation plus trading licenses. [1] [9]
Career began overseas as analyst-trader at AM-TD Securities, then executive director at Huahong Capital. [1] In 2009, joined Tiantu Capital as senior partner. In 2010, led the 60M RMB first-round investment in Zhou Hei Ya, serving as director, helping transform it from a Wuhan regional brand into a national snack brand valued at over 10B RMB. [1] [9]
At Tiantu, also led investments in Cimming Health Check (50M), Yestar Medical Beauty (~200M with Legend Capital), Fuenet Laundry (Series A), and Mankaron Jewelry (52M), earning the nickname ‘Wang the Chain.’ [9] In December 2013, spoke at the Zero2IPO annual conference on LP institutionalization. [9]
In March 2014, became partner at Sequoia Capital China. Led investments in Liu Liu Mei (Series A ~150M), Gan Yuan Foods, Yunmi Technology (later NASDAQ IPO), Colorkey cosmetics (angel ~100M), and Jianfu Convenience (200M at 1.2B valuation). [1] [9] In November 2015, presented luxury brand investment logic at the Hu Lizhi & Hearst Global Fashion Innovation Forum, arguing ‘individual high-end luxury brands are rarely investable.’ [13] In 2016, served as judge on Inner Mongolia TV’s ‘Makers in China.’ [9] In July 2017, argued at the Rongzhongguo Summit that ‘China’s capital market seriously undervalues consumer sectors.’ [8] In September 2017, delivered ‘New Consumer Forces’ keynote at GIIS. [9]
In 2018, delivered keynote on restaurant brand business model design at the 21st Hongcan Conference. [9] In 2020, founded the CCC Consumer King Accelerator during the pandemic. [9] In March 2021, established B Capital with a $100M debut fund and launched the Consumer King Accelerator program. [1] [9] In November 2021, gave an exclusive interview to CNR’s ‘Face to Face.’ [9]
In 2023, fully embraced new media, accumulating nearly 15M B-class followers on Douyin, with livestreams reaching 17K concurrent viewers organically. [3] [9] Multiple invited lectures in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Hangzhou. [9] In 2024, named Asia’s Most Influential Consumer Industry Figure; Waves listed his new media transformation among the ‘10 Major Decisions That Changed the Investment Community.’ [4] [9]
In 2025, established the ‘New Business’ community and shifted to tech-consumer. Empowerment cases include Laifen (monthly sales 3M to 400M), Roborock (global sales leader), AI PPT (No.1 in China, No.2 globally, 20M+ users, IPO initiated), Konka (500% growth in 2 months), Face Bear (6,000 stores in 3 years), Happy Sweet Potato (1,200 new stores in 1 year), and 100+ brands. [9] [10]
Wang Cen’s investment methodology is ‘ascetic focus’ — over two decades, only consumer, never chasing fads, never touching unfamiliar fields. [1] He sums up the barrier: ‘Hard work IS the moat.’ [8] ‘In developing countries’ consumer sectors, I believe hard work is the moat. Learn from martial artists — be real, don’t play games.’ [13]
Through 25 years of consumer and tech investment, he developed his theoretical system: [9]
‘Consumer 5 Forces Model’ — deeply deconstructs all consumer brands, summarizing ‘companies are like people, with five organs,’ identifying 5 core capabilities and their priorities across different business environments. [9]
‘Consumer 345 Code’ — studies 100 years of business history in developed Western economies, identifying common patterns of breakthrough and counter-cyclical growth at economic bottoms, validated through practice with entrepreneurs in 2022-2025. [9]
In post-investment management, he proposed the famous ‘18-year-old village girl’ theory: ‘I hope the product I invest in is like an 18-year-old village girl. I bring her to Beijing, give her a makeover, send her to the World Beauty Contest, and she places top 3. I enjoy those five years — that’s value creation.’ [6] This reflects ‘being there without overstepping’ — deep involvement without replacing founder autonomy. [1]
On selecting founders: ‘What’s hardest to replicate? Not the business model — it’s your passion, your ferocity.’ [7] On strategy: ‘Don’t come talking about hitting Beijing’s high-end malls. Products can be premium, but start from the ground up. High people doing low things make money more easily.’ [8]
He prefers ‘slightly crazy or aggressive entrepreneurs, willing to share profits, broad-minded.’ [8] He advises: ‘Don’t rush, endure three years of solitude. Initial conviction matters most.’ [13]
Wang Cen’s influence extends beyond investment. After embracing new media in 2023, he accumulated nearly 15M B-class followers (primarily business owners, 20% listed company executives) on Douyin, becoming a brand recommender and life services honor mentor. [3] He is one of Douyin’s most successful ‘co-broadcasting’ business mentors, with livestreams reaching 17K concurrent viewers organically (no paid traffic). [9]
His videos dissect industry myths: on franchise brands, ‘whether headquarters has supply chain capabilities determines whether franchisees can make money’; on new consumer brands, ‘if the repurchase rate is below 30%, no matter how hot it is, it’s a flash in the pan.’ [1] His解读 of Qian Da Ma’s ‘daily clearance model’ became a ‘store opening guide,’ with related videos exceeding 100M views. [1]
Through B-class traffic resources, he helped multiple brands achieve explosive growth: [9] • Laifen: monthly sales from 3M to 400M, becoming China’s leading hair dryer brand in under 3 years • Roborock: topped global sales chart, market cap exceeded 100B • AI PPT: No.1 in China, No.2 globally (after US’s Gamma), 20M+ users, initiated HK IPO • Konka: 500% month-over-month sales growth in 2 months • Face Bear: 6,000 stores in 3 years, new paradigm in light beauty • Happy Sweet Potato: 1,200 new stores in 1 year • 100+ brands including Baiguoyuan, Zhou Hei Ya, Liu Liu Mei, Bama Tea, Colorkey, Laifen, Konka, Tan Xiaoyu. [9]
In 2024, Waves listed his new media transformation among the ‘10 Major Decisions That Changed the Investment Community.’ [4] Multiple invited lectures in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Hangzhou. [9]
In 2025, established the ‘New Business’ community, transforming influence into a systematic entrepreneur empowerment platform, while shifting focus to tech-consumer. [10] Repeatedly rated ‘China’s Top 10 Consumer Investors’ (2021), ‘Best Consumer Investor of the Year’ (2022), ‘Asia’s Most Influential Consumer Industry Figure’ (2024). [9]
His ‘preaching’ always carries reverence. When brands flocked to influencer marketing: ‘Traffic can bring temporary popularity, but product strength is the ticket to ride through cycles.’ [1] On economic cycles: ‘Don’t fight the trend — ride the wave. Business has its seasons, and so does entrepreneurship. When you can’t find direction, don’t force it — sometimes waiting is wisdom.’ [11]
