For more than a decade, China's manufacturing base, motor supply chains, science-and-technology capital system and artificial-intelligence research accumulated, piece by piece, until humanoid robots slowly moved from science fiction toward the threshold of industrial reality. But an open window does not hand success to everyone who steps through it. Most either followed mature overseas routes step by step, or chased hot concepts in a hurry to cash in. Few were willing to commit to a road that was cold, long, and full of grinding engineering detail.

Wang Xingxing was one of the few. Weak English kept him out of Zhejiang University; in a Shanghai University laboratory he built the XDog robot dog; while the industry ran toward hydraulic drive, he staked everything on the unfashionable outer-rotor direct-drive motor; and after two months at DJI, he left, taking 2 million yuan in angel funding to begin a ten-year technical marathon.
