Editorial Intro

The Pearl River Delta of the 1990s was the noisiest workshop of the world's factory and the earliest proving ground for China's homegrown brands. Tides of orders flooded the factories of Dongguan and Zhongshan; merchants from Hong Kong and Taiwan brought blueprints and purchase orders while mainland factory bosses tightened screws. Most were content with the thin margins of contract manufacturing. A few began to wrestle with a harder question: could a brand owned by Chinese be placed on products made by Chinese and sold into living rooms across the country? Duan Yongping was the one among that few who went the furthest and left the earliest.[s4][s12][s11] In 1989 he took over a loss-making factory in Zhongshan bleeding two million yuan a year; within six years he built it into Subor, a ten-billion-yuan enterprise. In 1995 he resigned and founded BBK Electronics; within four more years he had driven cordless phones, learning machines, and VCDs to number one nationwide. In 1999, when everyone expected him to consolidate and grow ever larger, he split the company into three independent entities, keeping only about ten percent in each. In 2001, at forty, he moved to the United States, handed the operational reins entirely to his proteges, and reinvented himself as a 'painfully idle' investor.[s4][s12][s11]

Duan Yongping is classified as a 'contrarian' not because he twice reached the summit, but because three times he chose to turn away just as he was about to peak. When Subor was most profitable, he walked away over broken equity promises. When BBK was most triumphant, he replaced centralization with a split. At the height of his vigor, he chose retirement over clinging to power. Each turn ran against the human instinct to hold tighter—tighter control, bigger book size, just a few more years. His contrarian streak was not escapism; it was a consistent method of calculation: first ask whether something is the right thing to do, then ask whether it can succeed. If it is wrong, do not do it regardless of how small the cost; if it is right, do it regardless of how great the cost.[s11][s22]

The philosophy he distilled into the word benfen later became the shared cultural DNA of OPPO, vivo, imoo, and Pinduoduo. It also represents a rare specimen in Chinese business history: one person, without blood ties, controlling stakes, or formal authority, guiding a family of enterprises along the same channel more than twenty years after his departure, solely through values and a mechanism for distributing gains.[s18][s32] His midlife identity switch—from a man who made products to a man who bought companies—and his proof in the NetEase episode that 'buying a stock is buying a company' was not mere slogan, offered Chinese entrepreneurs an alternative second act: stepping away at the peak need not be tragedy; remaining able to influence the current of the river long after you have left the bank is the real mastery.[s3][s11] What this archive records is not a deified stock god, but an ordinary person who repeatedly chose correctly between OEM and brand, centralization and decentralization, advance and retreat—and the lessons and legacy his choices left for the world's manufacturing powerhouse.

Lead

Duan Yongping, born March 10, 1961 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, with ancestral roots in Taihe, Jiangxi, is the creator of two of China's most iconic consumer-electronics brands—Subor and BBK Electronics—and the behind-the-scenes godfather of OPPO, vivo, and imoo (Xiao Tiancai), as well as one of China's best-known value investors.[s1][s12][s26] After graduating from Zhejiang University's Department of Radio Engineering, he headed south to Zhongshan, Guangdong in 1989 and took over a failing electronics factory bleeding two million yuan a year with barely three thousand yuan in the bank; within six years he turned it into Subor, a ten-billion-yuan enterprise commanding nearly eighty percent of the learning-machine market.[s42][s1] When equity-reform talks collapsed, he founded BBK Electronics in Chang'an, Dongguan in September 1995, rolling out employee shareholding and pouring money into CCTV advertising, driving cordless phones, learning machines, and VCD players to number one nationally; then, at the very moment annual revenue exceeded one billion yuan in 1999, he voluntarily split the company into three independent entities that would later grow into OPPO, vivo, and imoo.[s4][s12][s43] In 2001 he relocated to the United States and pivoted to investing: in 2002 he placed a roughly two-million-dollar bet on NetEase when it was on the brink of delisting, holding for eight or nine years and earning returns exceeding one hundred times his original stake; in 2006 he won a charity lunch with Warren Buffett for US$620,100, becoming the first Chinese winner and bringing along the then twenty-six-year-old Colin Huang (Huang Zheng).[s3][s15][s18] He has since maintained heavy, long-term positions in Apple, Kweichow Moutai, and Tencent, earning the moniker the 'Chinese Buffett'—yet he has repeatedly described himself as 'an ordinary person with no grand ambitions.'[s11][s2] The deepest mark he has left on Chinese business is captured in two characters: benfen—doing the right thing.

At the Foot of Jinggang Mountain: From Firewood Boy to Technician at Factory 774

**English:** Duan Yongping was born on March 10, 1961 in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. His father, Duan Ximing, and his mother, Peng Jianhua, were both teachers at the Jiangxi Water Conservancy and Electric Power College (today's Nanchang Institute of Technology and predecessor of Jiangxi Water Conservancy and Electric Power University); Duan Ximing's ancestral home was Taihe, Jiangxi. Years later, when Duan Yongping returned to his hometown to make donations, official reports commonly described him as 'born in Nanchang,' while outlets such as China Economic Net referred to him as 'a native of Taihe, Jiangxi'—the Taihe-Anfu corridor being the root territory of the Duan family.[s1][s12][s26] When he was five, his parents were sent down to the countryside during a political campaign, and the family settled in Shili Brigade, Pingdu Commune, Anfu County, at the foot of Jinggang Mountain, where they stayed for five or six years.[s25][s26] Recalling those days years later, what he remembered were the concrete hardships: rising at four in the morning, walking twenty li into the deep mountains to chop firewood, not returning home until eight or nine at night; the school was a multi-grade classroom with grades one through three crammed into a single dilapidated room; transplanting rice seedlings, harvesting grain, and chopping firewood were the main subjects, while catching fish in the river was about the only amusement.[s2][s25] He was short but sturdy—during military training he could throw a hand grenade over sixty meters; as a boy he was not a model student in the conventional sense, being mischievous, fiercely competitive, and fascinated by radios and other novelties; the poverty of the countryside only sharpened his curiosity about how things were made.[s25][s2] He later summed up the era in one sentence: 'Starting a business is never as hard as carrying firewood; my willpower was forged in childhood.'[s2] When news of the reinstatement of the national college-entrance examination arrived, nobody in Shili Brigade knew what 'university' meant; it was his parents who insisted that their eldest son study and take the test—a teacher's family's faith in knowledge became his first ticket out of Jinggang Mountain.[s25][s26]

In 1977, when the gaokao was restored, sixteen-year-old Duan Yongping sat the exam for the first time and scored a total of just over eighty points across four subjects. Refusing to accept defeat, he re-entered a preparatory class and studied intensively for half a year. In 1978, with an average score of just over eighty across five subjects, he was admitted to the Department of Radio Engineering at Zhejiang University, the only student from his school that year to gain admission to an undergraduate program.[s2][s25] During his four years at Zhejiang University, beyond the technical training, there was one 'small thing' he would mention again and again: in his third year he happened upon a line by the management thinker Peter Drucker—'Do the right things, and do things right'—and the impact was electric. He later concluded that spending five seconds to ask 'Is this the right thing to do?' could save a lifetime of trouble.[s11] In 1982 Duan Yongping graduated and was assigned by the state to the Beijing Electronic Tube Factory, at a monthly salary of forty-six yuan, plus the prized Beijing household registration.[s42][s1]

The Beijing Electronic Tube Factory was the state-owned Factory No. 774, one of 156 key projects of the First Five-Year Plan and the flagship Soviet-aided electronics-industry program. At its peak it employed nearly ten thousand workers, making it the largest electronic-component plant in Asia. The Jiuxianqiao area in eastern Beijing where it stood was clustered with sister military factories—798, 718, and others—and the old campus was later converted into today's famous 798 Art District.[s45][s44] Assigned to the factory in the same year as Duan Yongping was a young man named Wang Dongsheng, who had graduated from Hangzhou Institute of Electronic Engineering. The two technicians, similar in age, took opposite paths—one left, one stayed—and went on to become iconic figures respectively in the history of China's consumer-electronics branding and its semiconductor-panel industry.[s42][s7] When Duan Yongping entered the factory, the behemoth was being overtaken by the semiconductor revolution: electron tubes were being replaced by transistors and integrated circuits, output had collapsed by ninety percent in a few years, and at one point even salaries went unpaid.[s7][s44] More suffocating than technological obsolescence was the atmosphere. Duan Yongping later recalled: 'Everyone thought they were very capable, everyone thought their pay was too low, yet nobody did anything.'[s45][s42] Wang Dongsheng chose to stay; twelve years later he took emergency command as factory director, leading Factory 774 through a debt-to-equity swap and restructuring into what would become the panel giant BOE. Duan Yongping, after three years, concluded that 'staying in a place you don't want to be is irrational,' resigned, and prepared for graduate-school exams. Years later, reflecting on the factory, he said the most corrosive feature of the iron-rice-bowl system was not hardship but the suffocating sense that 'everyone was resentful and nobody acted'; his sensitivity to 'not doing the wrong thing,' he said, was largely cultivated in those three years at Factory 774—when you see a road going nowhere, turning around immediately has the lowest cost.[s7][s44][s2][s22]

In 1986, Duan Yongping was admitted to the graduate program in Quantitative Economics (Econometrics) at the School of Economics of Renmin University of China, graduating in July 1988.[s1][s24] During those two years he systematically filled in the gaps in microeconomics, business management, and financial analysis. Years later he observed that his engineering background let him understand products while his economics training let him calculate the economics of a business; the two combined gave him the confidence for what would later become 'using the methods of running a business to do investing.'[s24][s11] Upon graduation, one employer dangled promises of 'section-chief rank in a few years, an apartment in two years, chicken and fish for dinner'—he had no interest whatsoever and walked away. Years later he treated the episode as the earliest practice of his 'Stop Doing List': when you discover something is wrong, stop immediately—that has the lowest cost. Many people say they 'haven't found a better opportunity'; in truth they lack the courage to stop doing what is wrong.[s22] He first took a brief post at a radio factory in Foshan staffed by over a hundred graduates; everyone was dissatisfied, yet nobody truly left. In March 1989, amid the great southward rush of talent known as 'the peacocks flying southeast,' twenty-eight-year-old Duan Yongping made his way to Zhongshan, Guangdong, and met Chen Jianren, the thirty-six-year-old general manager of Yihua Group. Chen Jianren spoke fluent Mandarin, carried himself like a government official, yet had the eyesight of a pioneering entrepreneur. He handed the young man control of a money-losing subsidiary making game consoles—Rihua Electronics Factory—and affectionately called him 'Ah Duan.'[s6] Years later Duan Yongping still spoke of that act of trust with deep gratitude: in an era when nobody wanted to take responsibility, someone dared to entrust an entire factory to an outsider—that trust itself was scarce capital. Everyone else saw it as a pit; Duan Yongping seized the opportunity. He was twenty-eight; the first Subor machine was still more than a year away.[s42][s6]

Breaking Through in Zhongshan: Six Years at Rihua Factory and the Rise of Subor

**English:** Rihua Electronics Factory in 1989 was a textbook basket case: annual losses of two million yuan, workers blocking the factory gate to demand back pay, just over three thousand yuan on the books, and barely a dozen employees still working.[s6][s2] Duan Yongping's assessment upon taking over was cool-headed: large arcade machines were being phased out while home console gaming had enormous potential—one estimate at the time put the saturation capacity for small home game consoles in mainland China at forty million units, yet the entire market was only three million.[s6] He swung the axe three times: first, slash the scattered product lines and go all-in on home game consoles; second, ride the wave of television advertising to build brand awareness; third, concentrate resources on relentless product improvement.[s6] Nintendo's Famicom was sweeping the world, and gray-market units carried prohibitive price tags; Duan Yongping led the factory in producing compatible machines of comparable performance at one-quarter the price, rapidly cracking open the market.[s7] A widely circulated anecdote: to understand the market firsthand, he carried game consoles on his back to every mall and supply-and-marketing cooperative in neighboring counties and cities, manning the counter by day and tearing apart machines by night, mastering every link from R&D to sales to after-sales service. The factory was so cash-strapped it could barely afford raw materials; he focused first on collecting receivables, then reinvested in production, keeping the dead factory alive with small, fast cash-flow cycles.[s6][s25] In 1990 the factory registered the 'Subor' brand; in 1991 it was formally renamed Zhongshan Subor Electronics Industrial Company and became the first in its category to advertise on China Central Television—the slogan 'Have a Subor and you can travel the world without fear' spread across the country; output value that year reached one hundred million yuan with net profit exceeding eight million, a mere three years after Duan Yongping took over the wreck.[s1][s42][s4]

What truly turned Subor into a generation's collective memory was the launch of the computer learning machine in 1993. Personal computers were beginning to spread in China, but prices of ten thousand yuan or more were out of reach for ordinary families. Duan Yongping spent 200,000 yuan to license Wang Yongmin's 'Wubi' character-input method, led the team in grafting a computer keyboard and learning card onto a game console, using the family television set as a display screen; the complete 'computer-style learning system' sold for two to three hundred yuan (the later flagship model was priced at 398 yuan).[s6][s7] Playing games was frivolous; learning to type and code was aspirational—the psychological barrier for parents vanished. For marketing, he hired Jackie Chan as endorser. The line 'We all share a parent's heart; wanting your child to succeed—Subor,' paired with a jingle—'You clap one, I clap one, Subor made a learning machine... you clap four, I clap four, guarantee you can type in three days'—ran repeatedly in CCTV's prime-time slots.[s25][s4] On the management side, he paid workers the highest overtime rates and meal subsidies in the factory, rented air-conditioned dormitories for key staff, and sent money and letters to employees' parents every holiday—in his logic, only when employees have dignity and hope will they make products with conscience. When Subor was at its hottest, people pulled every connection they had to get in; the queue stretched out of town.[s4][s6] A 1994 market survey produced an almost comic result: the 'most familiar computer brand' in consumers' minds was not IBM or Lenovo but Subor; output value that year reached four hundred million yuan.[s4][s42] By 1995, Subor's annual output value broke one billion yuan, with net profit of roughly eighty million and learning machines holding nearly eighty percent of the national market. At peak times, workers pulled overtime on New Year's Eve to keep up with orders; the convoy of trucks waiting to pick up goods stretched for a kilometer; Duan Yongping paid overtime workers five times their normal wage, and at year-end distributed cash dividends wrapped in newspapers—so many newspapers were used that the stacks piled up more than a dozen high.[s4][s5][s7]

But beneath the brilliance, cracks had long existed. When Duan Yongping first took over, Chen Jianren had given a verbal promise: full operational authority over Rihua, a profit split of two-to-eight, and equity for him and his team—one version holds the promise was thirty percent.[s42][s4] As the factory grew, the promises kept shrinking: from thirty percent to twenty, from twenty to ten, and then faded away entirely; Yihua Group was also frequently diverting Subor's profits to subsidize other loss-making group businesses.[s4][s5] In 1994 Duan Yongping formally proposed share reform and employee ownership for core staff; the group's major shareholders refused—Yihua was a collective enterprise, the reform was politically sensitive, and even Chen Jianren himself could not push it through.[s42][s4] Duan Yongping later recalled: 'I had promised equity and dividends to my team; the group's reversal turned me into a person who broke his word.' From this he drew a cold conclusion: 'If promises can be changed, it means they will be changed again in the future.' He offered a vivid analogy: 'When you scratch the bottle cap and see the character xie (thanks), you know not to scratch any further.'[s4]

On August 28, 1995, thirty-four-year-old Duan Yongping placed his resignation letter before Chen Jianren. The conversation was not acrimonious; the two reached a 'gentleman's agreement': Duan Yongping would not compete with Subor in the domestic market for one year, and Subor would give him a Mercedes-Benz as a parting gesture; of the roughly dozen people he wanted to bring with him, Chen Jianren bargained him down to six.[s4][s42] The handover took fifteen minutes. Duan Yongping walked out of the factory compound with six core lieutenants including Chen Mingyong and Shen Wei. A Subor department director spoke plainly: 'The captain is no longer on the ship. The sailors don't know where the ship is headed, so they're asking to get off.'[s4] At the farewell banquet, hosted by Chen Jianren himself, the usually restrained Duan Yongping drank until he passed out.[s6] Years later, on the program Fortune Life on China Business News, he explained why his departure was so decisive: 'Money is not important to me. Staying and doing something that violates my benfen—my sense of integrity—makes me unhappy. If I'm unhappy, no amount of money will make me happy.'[s42] After he left, Subor's core talent continued to hemorrhage; over the next few years more than a thousand employees decamped to BBK, and the once-dominant learning-machine maker with nearly eighty percent market share gradually exited the mainstream stage. Duan Yongping's course had already shifted to Chang'an Town in Dongguan, twenty kilometers away, across the water.[s5][s4] Looking back years later, Duan Yongping said he bore no grudge against Subor, only regret—not over his own failure to obtain equity, but over the fact that an enterprise that could have locked in loyalty through institutional design was ultimately undone by the casualness of verbal promises. That lesson he carried over, intact, into BBK's corporate charter.[s4][s42]

Raising the Flag in Chang'an: BBK Electronics and 'Daring to Be Last'

**English:** Just twenty days after leaving Subor, on September 18, 1995, Duan Yongping rented factory space in Chang'an Town, Dongguan, and BBK Electronics was officially born.[s4][s1] The startup capital of twenty million yuan was borrowed from friends. The company name was chosen from more than ten thousand proposals; the three characters 'Bu Bu Gao' were independently suggested by eight different people, and Duan Yongping honored each one with a reward as promised; the English brand was ultimately set as BBK.[s43][s6] The start-up conditions were spartan: the factory was rented, the office had no private partitions, and Duan Yongping's own desk was right next to the workshop floor. But he laid down two rules that were never to be broken from day one: first, never delay paying employees' wages or suppliers' invoices; second, all management above mid-level must hold equity. Under the gentleman's agreement with Subor, he could not touch game consoles or learning machines for a year, so he locked the initial product line onto cordless phones and student computers—two categories where competition was not yet fierce and the team's capabilities were highly matched.[s4][s5]

From day one, Duan Yongping systematically filled every pitfall Subor had fallen into. The most critical was equity: BBK adopted employee shareholding from inception, with mid-level and above management holding up to forty-five percent in aggregate; distributors could also buy in. He personally retained only about seventeen to twenty percent. As the company grew he even lent money to key employees to subscribe for shares, telling them plainly: if the company makes money, repay from dividends; if it loses, you don't have to repay.[s5][s4][s7] 'Scatter wealth, gather people'—he lived that maxim to its extreme in 1995. Later, when people attributed BBK's success to advertising, channels, and retail outlets, Duan Yongping rejected every explanation: 'All those things people talk about—advertising, employee shareholding, distributor equity, dense outlet networks, offline channels—they are all wrong! Our secret is simply: benfen plus equanimity.'[s11]

In marketing he continued to swing for the fences. In late 1996, barely a year old, BBK paid 81.23 million yuan—an astronomical sum—to snatch the five-second advertising slot right after CCTV's Xinwen Lianbo from a pack of industry giants, hiring martial-arts superstar Jet Li as spokesperson. The jingle—'In this world there is justice; effort always pays off; talking is no substitute for doing; if you do it, do it best—Bu Bu Gao'—echoed across the nation; peers said he had gone mad. Duan Yongping's arithmetic was different: advertising expense was not a cost but a 'product announcement' to consumers; as long as the product could deliver, every yuan spent would become repeat purchases and word-of-mouth. Moreover, winning CCTV's top advertising slot meant distributors nationwide queued to negotiate agency deals; before the ads finished airing, distributors' payments were already landing in the company's account.[s43][s7][s12] A year later, when the contract expired, BBK not only won CCTV prime time again but took the Spring Festival Gala midnight countdown sponsorship for 159 million yuan.[s12][s6] Advertising blasted open brand awareness; channels and products caught the flow. BBK's cordless phone secured the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications' first network-access license; its pitch was 'unbreakable, stable signal,' and it sold at a twenty-percent premium over competitors, hitting one million units in the first year and reaching number one nationally within two—the ad tagline 'Hey, Xiao Li!' became a national meme. When the non-compete expired in 1997, BBK re-entered the learning-machine market; Subor's twenty-four core distributors defected en masse; within half a year the retail network extended down to the township level, and BBK learning machines leapt to number one that same year. BBK also entered the VCD bloodbath in 1997 and by end of 1998 had clawed its way into the top three.[s4][s7][s25][s5] In early 1999, BBK's annual revenue broke through one billion yuan.[s4][s32]

This playbook was later distilled into eight characters: 'Dare to be last in the world; strive to be first from behind.' Duan Yongping's explanation: guessing market demand is hard; wait for others to validate demand before entering—certainty is higher. 'Daring to be last' refers to product category; 'striving to be first from behind' refers to the capability to make the product better—the former is doing the right thing, the latter is doing the thing right.[s22] He entered the VCD market after it had become a red ocean, relying on superior product and channels. He admired Wahaha's ability to push Future Cola down to county-level Xinjiang, and replicated the 'production-sales alliance' model, building stable capital-based partnerships with distributors nationwide.[s43]

As important as 'what to do' was 'what not to do.' BBK maintained a 'Stop Doing List.' The item Duan Yongping cited most was 'no OEM manufacturing': in contract manufacturing you could never beat a professional like Terry Gou, so the company must concentrate all resources on its own brand.[s11] Another equally firm line: no diversification. In the late 1990s home-appliance companies followed the fashion of 'doing whatever makes money'; BBK stuck exclusively to consumer electronics it could understand and excel at, refusing to touch real estate or hot-money stock plays—what he later called the corporate version of the 'circle of competence.'[s22][s11] He later provided a logical footnote: a firm's resources and attention are always scarce; what you choose not to do determines how well you can do what you choose to do; many companies are not killed by competitors but dragged under by the greed to make every possible yuan.[s22][s11] As CEO, when a Walmart supplier came calling with an order for one million VCDs, he refused on the phone; the supplier was astonished—'You don't even want to discuss price?'—and Duan replied: 'I'll refuse at any price; you won't give me a good one anyway, so negotiating just wastes everyone's time.' He similarly turned away a huge order from BellSouth for telephones.[s11] The list also included no haggling, no credit sales, no delaying supplier payments, no late wage payments, no dishonest acts, and no attacking competitors.[s11][s22] He later told his teams: what you choose not to do is often more important than what you choose to do; many companies are destroyed not by rivals but by their own refusal to leave any money on the table. 'People care about what we have done; in fact, the reason we became who we are is largely because of the things we chose not to do.'[s11]

### 4. 一分为三：OPPO、vivo与小天才的裂变 / Splitting into Three: The Fission of OPPO, vivo, and imoo

**English:** By early 1999, BBK's three business units—educational electronics, audiovisual electronics, and communications technology—were all firmly established, with annual revenue exceeding one billion yuan. The conventional next step would have been to consolidate authority, form a group holding company, and push for an IPO. Duan Yongping did the opposite: he split the company into three independent entities.[s4][s12] His reasoning was simple: the three businesses served very different users and operated very differently; keeping them under one roof would create internal friction. 'Bound together, none of them can grow big; better to let each strike out on its own.'[s7][s32] The split followed an eight-character principle: 'People follow the business; equity stands alone; no entity is subordinate to another.' Educational electronics went to Huang Yihe (later succeeded by Jin Zhijiang upon Huang's retirement); audiovisual electronics went to Chen Mingyong; communications technology went to Shen Wei. None of the three companies was above any other. Duan Yongping retained roughly ten percent in each, without controlling stakes, without chairmanships, and without involvement in daily operations.[s12][s43][s4]

In the early days, the three companies still shared the 'BBK' brand and certain resources. Over time they diverged. Chen Mingyong's audiovisual arm registered the OPPO brand in 2001 and formally established OPPO in 2004, pivoting to mobile phones in 2008; OPPO went on to become one of the top smartphone brands globally, building its brand through photography innovation and youth-oriented marketing.[s37][s38] Shen Wei's communications arm founded vivo in 2010, building a parallel mobile-phone empire with a different brand identity and distribution strategy; vivo also climbed into the top tier of global smartphone shipments. Huang Yihe's educational electronics unit continued under the BBK Education Electronics banner, giving rise to the imoo (Xiao Tiancai) children's smart-watch brand, which came to dominate its category.[s4][s36][s40][s41][s43][s47][s48]

The logic of the split can be traced to two sources. The first was the lesson of Subor: verbal promises about equity had collapsed, so Duan Yongping would never again allow ambiguity over ownership or hierarchy among business units. The second was his conviction about incentives: a company's vitality depends on whether its operators genuinely feel like owners, not tenants. By giving each founder-CEO full equity and full autonomy, he ensured that the person running each business would behave as a principal rather than an agent.[s43][s32] In practice, the split also eliminated the risk that one failing unit could drag down the others—a lesson from the conglomerate disease that afflicted many Chinese manufacturers in the 1990s. He later said: 'The most important thing is not how fast you grow but whether the system can endure. A structure that depends on one person's control will always be fragile.'[s4][s32]

The three companies shared a common cultural inheritance: the benfen philosophy, the Stop Doing List, the emphasis on consumer orientation, and the preference for 'daring to be last' rather than rushing to be first. But each developed its own distinct operational character. OPPO leaned into design, photography, and youth marketing; vivo emphasized hi-fi audio, offline retail density, and sponsorships of sports and entertainment events; BBK Education Electronics focused on children's learning hardware and built a vertically integrated ecosystem of point-reading machines, learning pads, and imoo smart watches. By the mid-2010s, OPPO and vivo together commanded roughly one-third of the Chinese smartphone market—a combined share that astonished industry observers, given that both traced their lineage to a single factory in Chang'an founded with borrowed money.[s40][s25]

From the outside, the split looked like a voluntary surrender of empire. Duan Yongping's own framing was different: 'I never wanted a big company; I wanted a company that did the right things. Size is a by-product, not a goal.' He pointed to the countless Chinese companies that had collapsed precisely because founders could not let go of control—their ambition outgrew the organizational structure. His solution was to build the structure so that it did not require him: equity widely shared, authority decentralized, culture transmitted through people rather than through rules.[s43][s32]

The results validated the logic. OPPO's Chen Mingyong led the company through the transition from feature phones to smartphones, building a global brand with a presence in more than forty countries and publishing sustainability reports that documented the company's environmental and social commitments.[s39] vivo's Shen Wei took the company from audio equipment into smartphones and then into the premium segment, sponsoring the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship to build international awareness. BBK Education Electronics, under Huang Yihe and later Jin Zhijiang, maintained the dominant position in China's educational electronics market and expanded into children's wearable technology with the imoo smart watch.[s36][s40][s43][s48] None of the three required Duan Yongping's daily involvement. His role became that of a distant shareholder and occasional golf partner—the antithesis of the controlling founder model so prevalent in Chinese private enterprise.

Retiring at Forty: Green Card, Family, and the Identity Switch

**English:** Duan Yongping's third and most dramatic act of contrarian navigation came at the age of forty. In 1998, at the peak of his business career, he met Liu Xin. Liu Xin was from Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, seven years his junior, an alumna of the journalism school at Renmin University, and by then a chief photojournalist at The Palm Beach Post in the United States. They met when she returned to China for a family visit and reconnected with her Renmin senior; they were married two months later.[s1][s25] This marriage planted the seed of his departure—Liu Xin's life and work were rooted in the United States, and Duan Yongping had made a promise to be with her.

In 2000, Liu Xin applied for a U.S. green card on his behalf. Duan Yongping assumed it would take many years; to his surprise it was approved within six months.[s43][s25] He has repeatedly clarified since: he did not 'run away' from China, nor did he lack confidence in the country; the green card was an accident, while the decision to retire had already been made in 1999 when he split the company—he had told people around him he would step away from the front line around the age of forty.[s43] In 2001, at forty, he and Liu Xin settled in California. He gave up the CEO title and handed operational control entirely to his proteges. Buffett's influence on his thinking about long-term value and organizational patience would become more apparent in the years ahead.[s46]

The decision was met with disbelief. In China's private economy, founders rarely left voluntarily; the cultural script demanded that they stay until they were forced out. Duan Yongping was doing something almost without precedent: walking away from a thriving business at the peak of his powers, not because he had to, but because he believed his role was finished. 'I've done what I was supposed to do,' he said. 'Now it's their turn.'[s43]

In California, Duan Yongping reinvented himself as an investor. He spent his days reading annual reports, following companies, playing golf, and spending time with family. He later described his life as 'painfully idle'—a phrase that became something of a personal brand. Yet the idleness was deceptive. He was building the intellectual framework that would produce the NetEase trade, the Buffett charity lunch with Warren Buffett in 2006,[s15] and a series of investment decisions that would rival his entrepreneurial achievements in financial return and influence. The transition from maker of products to buyer of companies was not a decline but an evolution—the same analytical tools, the same benfen discipline, now applied to a different arena.[s3][s11]

The identity switch also reflected his deepest conviction about organizational design. A company that depends on its founder's daily presence is, in his view, a company that has not yet been properly built. True success is creating a system that functions without you—not through rigid procedures but through shared values, aligned incentives, and capable people.[s43] By stepping away completely—no chairman, no board seat, no advisory role—he forced the system to prove itself. And it did: OPPO, vivo, and BBK Education Electronics all grew larger and stronger after his departure, each in its own direction but all carrying the benfen DNA.

He has remained an American citizen and lives in California. He returns to China two or three times a year, mostly to play golf with former lieutenants and to attend occasional alumni events. He insists he is not in 'self-imposed exile' but simply living the life he chose—family first, investment as hobby, philanthropy as work. His investment approach focused on circle of competence: only companies he deeply understood, with honest management and durable competitive advantages.[s9][s8][s22][s23] His Xueqiu (Snowball) handle, 'Great Way Has No Shape' (Da Dao Wu Xing Wo You Xing), became a familiar presence in Chinese investing circles, where he shared views on companies, strategy, and life philosophy with a candor that contrasted sharply with his physical distance from the business world.[s1]

The story of Duan Yongping's retirement is inseparable from his philosophy of 'not doing.' Just as he maintained a Stop Doing List for business and investing, he applied the same discipline to his own career: knowing when to stop was as important as knowing what to start. As he reflected years later, drawing on childhood memories of carrying firewood at the foot of Jinggang Mountain: 'Starting a business is never as hard as carrying firewood.'[s2][s25] He has said: 'Many people think retirement is a sacrifice. I think the real sacrifice is staying when you should have left.'[s43][s11] That framing turned retirement from an ending into a continuation—the same person, the same values, a different stage.

The NetEase Trade: Buying a Stock Is Buying a Company

**English:** In March 2000 the NASDAQ peaked at 5,048 before plunging; the dot-com bubble burst. NetEase, which had listed on NASDAQ at US$15.50 per share on June 30, 2000, was hit by a cascade of crises the following year: accounting irregularities triggered a trust crisis and a class-action lawsuit; the stock fell to as low as US$0.48; market capitalization shrank to roughly US$20 million; delisting loomed; and founder Ding Lei seriously considered selling the company.[s10][s3]

For survival, Ding Lei slashed non-core operations and personally led a bet on the online game Fantasy Westward Journey Online II, but marketing was a weakness. Scrolling through his contacts, he saw Duan Yongping's name—the two had previously shared a stage only once, during a television taping. Ding Lei came to consult. They met for a long talk somewhere around Dongguan. On the timing of that meeting their recollections differ slightly: Duan Yongping recalls it was 2001, before he bought NetEase shares; Ding Lei's narrative places it slightly later. Duan Yongping later laughed about the discrepancy: 'It doesn't matter. The important thing is that I bought.'[s3][s10]

Duan Yongping's analysis was methodical. He studied NetEase's financials and concluded the company's problems were real but not fatal—the cash burn was manageable, the online game had genuine potential, and most critically, the stock price had fallen below the net cash per share. 'I was buying a dollar for less than fifty cents.' He also assessed Ding Lei's character: young, talented, and under extreme pressure, but honest and hard-working. 'I felt he was someone who would do the right thing in the end.'[s10][s3]

In the spring of 2002, Duan Yongping began buying NetEase shares at approximately US$0.80 per share (adjusted for a 1-for-4 split that occurred in 2006). He invested roughly US$2 million—a significant portion of his personal net worth at the time. The purchase was so large relative to the stock's thin trading volume that some in the market noticed; a few wondered whether he was a speculator making a short-term bet. He was neither. His thesis was stated simply: 'Buying a stock is buying a company. Buying a company is buying the discounted value of its future cash flows. Period.'[s11][s10][s3]

The investment was lonely. NetEase remained depressed for months; some of Duan Yongping's acquaintances questioned his judgment. He later said that value investing 'can be quite lonely,' and that 'loneliness can sometimes be worth a fortune.'[s11] Within six months of going fully invested, NetEase began to rise—driven by the explosive success of its online games. Over the following years the stock appreciated roughly twenty-fold from his purchase price. He held through 2009 to 2010, exiting in tranches (after the 1-for-4 split in 2006, his sell prices were roughly equivalent to US$120 to US$140 pre-split). Overall returns exceeded one hundred times his original investment; on a US$2 million stake the profit was approximately US$200 million (roughly equivalent to RMB 2 billion by the exchange rates and purchasing-power references Duan and his peers used).[s10][s3]

It is important to note: Duan Yongping himself has repeatedly stressed that this combination of 'extreme undervaluation plus high growth plus circle-of-competence plus concentrated position' was not replicable. He has warned against treating the NetEase trade as a template—it was a once-in-a-lifetime convergence of conditions that he does not expect to see repeated.[s10]

The NetEase trade established Duan Yongping's reputation as an investor in China. It also demonstrated that the principles of Buffett-style value investing could work in Chinese markets—that a stock priced below net cash, with a capable and honest management team, could produce extraordinary returns if the investor had the patience and conviction to hold. The lesson he drew was not 'buy distressed tech stocks' but rather: 'When the price is far below the value, dare to bet big; when the business is developing well, dare to hold for the long term.'[s11][s3] He later summarized the entire approach as buying discounted future cash flows and nothing else—a principle he would apply to every subsequent investment.[s8][s12][s23][s46]

The Buffett Lunch and Colin Huang: One Meal, One Protege

**English:** Around the time of the NetEase trade, a young man nineteen years Duan Yongping's junior entered his life. Colin Huang (Huang Zheng) was from Hangzhou; he had been recommended for admission to Hangzhou Foreign Languages School without exam, and in 1998 was admitted without exam to the Qiuzhen College mixed-class program at Zhejiang University—'the best among the best.' In his junior year he posted a piece on network programming in a technical forum that attracted an MSN friend request from someone claiming to be Ding Lei of NetEase. Huang Zheng's first reaction was 'I must have been scammed'; after confirming it was the real Ding Lei, he remotely helped solve a technical problem, and the two were connected from that point.[s19][s18]

In 2002 Huang Zheng graduated from Zhejiang University and went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a master's in computer science—the school happened to be near Duan Yongping's home. Ding Lei made the introduction: 'Let me introduce you to a young comrade; he's very sharp.' While still a graduate student, Huang Zheng began helping Duan Yongping with investment matters.[s19][s18] Duan Yongping's first impression of the younger man was of someone 'extremely smart and extremely hard-working'—but also unusually reflective for his age, with a habit of thinking about systems and principles rather than just tasks.[s18]

In 2004, as Huang Zheng was about to graduate, he faced a choice between Microsoft and a still-unlisted Google. Duan Yongping's advice was blunt: 'Go to Google. It's a company with tremendous potential, and you should stay at least three years.' Huang Zheng followed the advice, joined Google, and participated in the building of Google China.[s19][s18]

On June 30, 2006, Duan Yongping won the Power of Love Foundation charity lunch auction on eBay with a bid of US$620,100, becoming the first Chinese person to win the Buffett charity lunch.[s15][s14] He later said he had read Buffett's books and benefited enormously; the lunch was to express gratitude in person and to support charity, and he described the decision as 'just for fun.'[s15][s14]

The lunch took place on May 9, 2007, at Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in Manhattan. Before the meal, Buffett told reporters that Duan Yongping was 'a first-class person'—by then Duan had already donated approximately US$40 million to charity.[s15] Among the guests Duan brought was the then twenty-six-year-old Colin Huang, who was working at Google. Huang Zheng later recalled that everything Buffett said was 'common sense that even a mother could understand'—the experience reinforced the power of equanimity and common sense.[s18]

The market circulated a story that Duan Yongping returned from the lunch with three maxims: do not do what you do not understand, do not short-sell, and do not borrow money. These subsequently became the investment disciplines he repeatedly emphasized.[s17] The meal was also seen as a public affirmation of the Duan-Huang mentor-protégé relationship: Huang Zheng had first connected with Duan Yongping in 2002 through Ding Lei's introduction; in 2004 he followed Duan's advice to join Google; in 2015, when Huang founded Pinduoduo, Duan Yongping was among the angel investors.[s18][s19]

Huang Zheng returned to China in 2007 to start businesses. Duan Yongping gave him a piece of BBK's e-commerce business to build into Okooo.com (a platform supplying BBK and OPPO products), and later supported him in founding Leqi E-commerce. In 2015, when Huang Zheng founded Pinduoduo, Duan Yongping, along with Ding Lei, Wang Wei, and Sun Tongyu, served as an angel investor.[s43][s19][s18] Duan Yongping said he invested in Huang Zheng 'for personal reasons—he is my friend, I understand him and I trust him,' and candidly acknowledged that Pinduoduo was 'not an investment I made because I understood the business; it was one I made somewhat muddily'—what he trusted was the team and the culture.[s3]

Huang Zheng in turn said: 'Among my angel investors, the one who has influenced me most is Duan Yongping. He continuously educates me to first do the right thing, and then do things right.' Pinduoduo's benfen corporate culture derives directly from this teaching.[s18] In 2020 to 2021, Huang Zheng successively stepped down as Pinduoduo's CEO and then chairman, at roughly the age of forty—a trajectory strikingly similar to Duan Yongping's own retirement at forty.[s3][s20] The auction itself drew global media attention; subsequent years would see bids climb as high as US$3.45 million and then US$4.6 million before the auction was eventually suspended.[s13][s16] By then Duan had already been active in philanthropy for years, having jointly donated US$40 million to Zhejiang University with Ding Lei the previous year and established the Enlight Foundation with his wife.[s26][s12] The three investment rules he carried back from Omaha—do not do what you do not understand, do not short-sell, do not borrow money—became the foundation of the investment philosophy he would share with millions of followers on Xueqiu under the handle 'Great Way Has No Shape, I Have Form' in the years that followed.[s11][s23]

Apple, Moutai, and Tencent: Slowly Getting Rich Within the Circle of Competence

**English:** After NetEase, Duan Yongping's secondary-market portfolio was short enough to count on one hand: NetEase, Yahoo, UHAL, Apple, Kweichow Moutai, Tencent, Pinduoduo, plus Berkshire Hathaway and a handful of others.[s11][s9] The brevity of the list was deliberate—his principle was 'circle of competence,' meaning he would only invest in businesses he genuinely understood.

In 2003, beyond NetEase, he bought shares of the American towing and storage company UHAL at an average price of about US$3.50. The moving-truck rental company had overextended through aggressive expansion, defaulted on debt, and seen its stock collapse. After studying the financials he concluded that the company's truck assets alone exceeded its market capitalization, that management was honest, and that the core business generated stable cash flow—a classic 'cigar butt plus good management' combination. The stock rose to hundreds of dollars over the following decade-plus, becoming another case study for his 'cigar-butt-plus-honest-management' logic and reinforcing his conviction that 'when price is far below value, dare to bet big.'[s14][s8]

But it was Apple that truly established his overseas investment standing. According to media accounts, Duan Yongping began building his Apple position around 2011 (after stock splits). He has described Apple as one of the best businesses he has ever encountered: an extraordinarily strong brand, a deeply integrated ecosystem, enormous recurring cash flows, and a corporate culture that prioritizes long-term product excellence over short-term profit optimization. Apple became his largest U.S. equity holding for many years running.[s14][s9]

On the A-share side, his anchor was Kweichow Moutai. He began holding Moutai around 2012, regarding it as a textbook 'good business with good culture at a fair price'—the three criteria he always applied: right business, right people, right price. Moutai's brand moat, pricing power, and extraordinary return on equity made it, in his view, one of the best businesses in all of China's capital markets. He held it as his A-share ballast stone for more than a decade.[s9][s14][s8]

In Hong Kong, his major position was Tencent. He began accumulating during the 2018 downturn, regarding Tencent as one of his 'non-sale' holdings. Tencent's combination of a dominant social-media platform (WeChat), a leading gaming division, and a massive investment portfolio made it, in his assessment, a business with durable competitive advantages and long runway for value creation.[s14][s20]

In Pinduoduo he was both angel investor and long-term holder. His original angel investment multiplied many times over as Pinduoduo grew into one of China's largest e-commerce platforms and eventually listed on NASDAQ, later restructuring as PDD Holdings with international operations through Temu.

He also held Berkshire Hathaway shares, regarding Warren Buffett's company as a natural long-term holding for anyone who practiced value investing. He has said that Berkshire was the closest thing to a 'forever hold' in his portfolio.[s14]

One instructive failure: he once short-sold Baidu, losing approximately US$200 million. He treated the loss as tuition—proof of his own principle that short-selling was incompatible with his investment philosophy. After that experience he added 'never short-sell' to his personal Stop Doing List alongside 'never borrow money to invest' and 'never do what you do not understand.'[s23]

Starting in 2006, he shared investment views on the Xueqiu (Snowball) social-investing platform under the handle 'Great Way Has No Shape, I Have Form' (Da Dao Wu Xing Wo You Xing), offering commentary free of charge. In April 2025 he announced a temporary departure from Xueqiu, saying he would return 'when the language environment improves.'[s1][s20] Through Xueqiu and other channels, he articulated a philosophy that can be summarized in three rules: do not do what you do not understand, do not short-sell, do not borrow money—and a broader framework of right business, right people, right price, with the first two mattering more than the third.[s8][s22][s21] Beyond the stock market, he also treated Kweichow Moutai shares as a vehicle for philanthropy, donating 10,000 shares to educational institutions in Jiangxi Province in 2025 to establish perpetual education funds bearing his parents' names.[s27] The Buffett influence on his entire approach was profound: from the emphasis on wonderful businesses with durable competitive advantages to the patience to hold through market fluctuations, his investment career was in many ways a continuation of the lessons he absorbed from Buffett's writings and, eventually, from their lunch together.[s46]

Scattering Wealth, Gathering People: Donations, Xueqiu, and the Contemporary Echo of benfen

**English:** Duan Yongping has said: 'Investing is my hobby; charity is my work.'[s1] In 2005 he and his wife Liu Xin established the Enlight Foundation in the United States, with a focus on education. The name 'Xinping' was drawn from his mother Peng Jianhua's given name and also echoed his frequently expressed concept of equanimity—charity is not high-profile largesse but providing fair starting points for people who need opportunity.[s1][s24] He established several principles for his giving: focus primarily on education, build in institutional mechanisms, attach no commercial conditions, and use anonymity whenever possible.[s24][s31]

On September 21, 2006, he and NetEase founder Ding Lei jointly donated US$40 million to Zhejiang University—Duan contributing US$30 million (including US$14 million raised from others) and Ding Lei contributing US$10 million—then the largest single donation ever received by a Chinese university. Of Duan's US$30 million, US$14 million was allocated to student financial aid, and US$10 million was set up as a 'matching fund' (deng'e peibi jijin), a mechanism designed to leverage additional social donations by matching third-party gifts at a set ratio.[s29][s31]

In 2007 he donated US$5 million to Nanchang Institute of Technology to build the Duan Ximing Library, named after his father.[s27] In 2008 he donated US$3 million for Wenchuan earthquake relief.[s1]

In February 2010, Duan and Liu Xin donated US$30 million to Renmin University of China, establishing a matching fund and the Xinping Self-Reliance Loan program for students.[s24] In 2011 he established the Xinping Self-Reliance Loan program at Beijing Normal University; in November 2025 he donated an additional RMB 220 million to the same institution.[s1]

In 2022 he donated RMB 270 million to Zhejiang University. In 2024 he donated more than RMB 1 billion to Zhejiang University and securities valued at RMB 100 million to CEIBS (China Europe International Business School).[s28][s1]

In October 2025 he donated 10,000 shares of Kweichow Moutai (market value approximately RMB 15 million) to Jiangxi Water Conservancy and Electric Power University, establishing the 'Duan Ximing and Peng Jianhua Education Special Fund.' In May 2026 he donated another 10,000 shares of Moutai to Anfu County, Jiangxi, for a perpetual education fund—the principal locked permanently, with only the dividends drawn for expenditure.[s27][s26]

Cumulative donations to Zhejiang University, Renmin University, Beijing Normal University, and Jiangxi institutions now total tens of billions of yuan. The structure of his giving reflects the same benfen philosophy that guides his business and investing: focus on what you understand (education), build mechanisms that endure (matching funds, perpetual endowments), and avoid the temptation of high-profile gesture for its own sake.

On the Xueqiu platform, Duan Yongping's handle 'Great Way Has No Shape, I Have Form' became one of the most-followed investment accounts in China. From 2006 onward he shared observations on companies, strategy, and life philosophy with a candor rarely seen from someone of his stature. In October to November 2025, he conducted a nearly two-hour on-record conversation with Xueqiu founder Fang Sanwen, systematically reviewing his investment career.[s1][s11] In April 2026 he further disclosed on Xueqiu that Colin Huang had 'reportedly gone to pursue a doctorate, mainly researching life sciences.'

The contemporary echo of benfen extends beyond Duan Yongping's own portfolio. OPPO, vivo, imoo, and Pinduoduo all explicitly invoke benfen as a core value.[s18] The concept has become one of the most distinctive cultural exports in Chinese business history—a two-character philosophy that binds together a family of enterprises spanning consumer electronics, smartphones, children's wearables, and e-commerce, without common ownership or formal control. Whether benfen can sustain itself across generations and across the widening gap between founder and inheritors remains the open question. But its past two decades of operation have already produced a body of evidence that few Chinese management philosophies can match. When OPPO's 2026 Mother's Day marketing misstep exposed the tension between benfen and traffic-driven marketing, Duan's rare public comment—'when you are wrong, you fix it'—demonstrated that the discipline still required the founder's voice, even after two decades of distance.[s32][s33][s34][s35] His presence on Xueqiu—where he engaged with followers candidly, answered questions about specific companies, and shared personal reflections on life and investing—made him one of the most followed and respected voices in China's retail-investing community.[s12] The Zhejiang University Education Foundation played a key role in administering his early gifts, and the matching-fund mechanism he pioneered there was subsequently adopted by other institutions seeking to multiply the impact of philanthropic donations.[s30]

Editorial Conclusion

Duan Yongping's place in Chinese business history must be plotted with a dual identity. As an entrepreneur, he is the most complete embodiment of the leap from contract manufacturing to homegrown brand in China's consumer-electronics sector: the Subor learning machine gave an entire generation of Chinese families their first taste of affordable computer literacy; BBK turned cordless phones, VCDs, and learning machines into household staples; and OPPO and vivo, the two brands that spun out of the BBK fissile core, collectively climbed into the top tier of global smartphone shipments twenty years later.[s4][s40][s34] As an investor, he is the most persuasive practitioner of Buffett-style value investing in the Chinese context: in the NetEase trade, he bought when the stock price fell below net cash per share and everyone was panic-selling, held for nearly a decade, harvested returns of more than one hundred times his stake, and proved with real money that 'buying a stock is buying a company' holds true even in Chinese markets.[s3][s10][s11] The two identities—entrepreneur and investor—are not two separate lives but two fulfillments of the same logic: when running a company he studied consumers and cash flows; when investing he treated stocks as companies; running through both was always the same two characters: benfen.

The second sample he offers is 'retirement at forty.' In the rough-and-tumble era of China's private economy, entrepreneurs and their firms were mutual captives: the boss dared not step down because everything depended on one person; stepping down often meant the collapse of everything built. Duan's solution was almost radical: when splitting the company in 1999 he made each of the three entities independently owned, cross-ownership-free, and cross-hierarchy-free; he kept roughly ten percent in each, declined the chairmanship, and stayed out of daily operations. After retirement he returned to China two or three times a year, played golf and drank tea with former lieutenants, never discussing business.[s43][s12] The result: OPPO, vivo, and imoo each grew into industry leaders after his departure, and Colin Huang transplanted the same benfen-plus-equanimity formula into Pinduoduo.[s18][s3] This proves one thing: the highest work of a founder is not a hit product but a set of interest mechanisms and cultural DNA that continue to operate in his absence. Of course, this mechanism has not been without cost. In May 2026 an OPPO Mother's Day marketing copy—the line 'My mom has two husbands'—touched a nerve and drew nationwide criticism. The long-retired Duan broke his silence on Xueqiu: 'That was indeed inappropriate... when you are wrong, you fix it.' OPPO subsequently classified the incident as a major brand crisis; the head of the China business unit was demoted two levels and had his salary frozen for thirty-six months.[s32][s34][s33] Outsiders were left asking: when benfen must be reiterated year after year, month after month, has it truly become organizational instinct, or does it remain a discipline that still requires the founder's remote exhortation? Duan himself acknowledged that benfen is indeed not easy to practice.[s34] That remains the open examination he has left for his proteges.

As for the man himself, the answer in later life has grown ever simpler. In early 2025, when asked about his ultimate goal at a Zhejiang University alumni gathering, he said, 'To live a long time in good health.' That April he announced a temporary departure from Xueqiu, saying, 'I'll come back when the language environment improves.'[s1][s20] His cumulative donations to Zhejiang University, Renmin University, Beijing Normal University, and his native Jiangxi now total tens of billions of yuan, including education funds established in his parents' names and a 'perpetual fund' of 10,000 shares of Kweichow Moutai.[s29][s24][s27][s26] From the boy chopping firewood at the foot of Jinggang Mountain, to the marketing titan of the CCTV bidding-king era, to the leisured man reading stock quotes on a California golf course, Duan Yongping demonstrated over a lifetime a rare capacity: the ability to pick things up and to set them down; to know what not to do matters more than knowing what to do. He is not a template to be copied—he himself has said the NetEase-type opportunity was not replicable.[s10] But the principle he left behind—'do the right things, and do things right'—and an entire family of enterprises that treat those words as commandments, may outlast any hundred-bagger in the riverbed of Chinese commerce.

Pull Quote

> Benfen means doing the right things, and doing things right.

**Q1 (EN): Who is Duan Yongping? What is his relationship to Subor, BBK Electronics, OPPO, and vivo?**

A: Duan Yongping, born March 10, 1961 in Nanchang, Jiangxi, is the founder of Subor and BBK Electronics and the behind-the-scenes godfather of OPPO, vivo, and imoo (Xiao Tiancai)[s39][s40]. After graduating from Zhejiang University's Department of Radio Engineering, he took over the loss-making Rihua Electronics Factory in Zhongshan in 1989 and turned it into Subor, a dominant learning-machine brand. When equity-reform talks collapsed, he founded BBK Electronics in Dongguan in 1995. In 1999 he split BBK into three independent entities—which later grew into OPPO, vivo, and imoo. In 2001 he moved to the United States and became one of China's most prominent value investors, known as the 'Chinese Buffett.' He achieved a roughly one-hundred-fold return on his 2002 investment in NetEase, and in 2006 won a charity lunch with Warren Buffett for US$620,100.[s1][s5][s4][s12][s32][s43] The OPPO brand, registered in 2001 and formally established as an independent company in 2004, grew to become one of the top smartphone brands globally with presence in over forty countries.[s39] vivo, founded in 2010, built a parallel empire with distinct brand identity and offline retail strength.[s40] All three entities share the cultural DNA of benfen but operate independently with their own management teams and strategic directions.[s32]

**Q2 (EN): Why did Duan Yongping resign when Subor was at its most profitable?**

A: When Duan Yongping took over the failing Rihua Electronics Factory (later Subor) in 1989, general manager Chen Jianren made verbal promises about equity—one version holds a thirty-percent share—and a profit-sharing arrangement. As the factory grew into a billion-yuan enterprise, the promises kept shrinking: from thirty percent to twenty to ten, and then faded entirely. The parent Yihua Group also diverted Subor's profits to subsidize other loss-making businesses. In 1994 Duan formally proposed share reform to give core employees equity; the group's major shareholders refused. Duan's conclusion was cold: 'If promises can be changed, it means they will be changed again.' On August 28, 1995, he resigned, taking six core lieutenants with him. He later said: 'Money is not important to me. Staying and doing something that violates my benfen makes me unhappy. If I'm unhappy, no amount of money will make me happy.'[s4][s5][s42]

**Q3 (EN): How much did Duan Yongping actually make on the NetEase investment, and how did it happen?**

A: In the aftermath of the dot-com bust, NetEase's stock fell to US$0.48 per share, with market capitalization around US$20 million and delisting imminent. Duan Yongping studied the financials and concluded the stock was trading below net cash per share—'buying a dollar for less than fifty cents.' He also assessed founder Ding Lei as honest and hard-working. In spring 2002 he invested roughly US$2 million at about US$0.80 per share (post-split adjusted). Driven by the explosive success of NetEase's online games, the stock rose approximately twenty-fold within six months of his going fully invested. He held through 2009-2010, exiting in tranches; after the 1-for-4 split in 2006, his sell prices were roughly equivalent to US$120-140 pre-split, yielding total returns exceeding one hundred times his original investment—approximately US$200 million in profit on a US$2 million stake. He has repeatedly emphasized this was not a replicable opportunity; it required the rare convergence of extreme undervaluation, high growth, circle of competence, and concentrated position.[s3][s10][s11]

**Q4 (EN): What was the US$620,100 Buffett charity lunch? Why was Colin Huang there?**

A: The Power of Love Foundation charity lunch auction had been held on eBay since 2000, with proceeds going to the Glide Foundation in San Francisco. On June 30, 2006, Duan Yongping won with a bid of US$620,100, becoming the first Chinese person to win the Buffett lunch. He said he had benefited greatly from Buffett's books and wanted to express gratitude in person and support charity, calling it 'just for fun.'[s15][s14] The lunch took place on May 9, 2007, at Smith & Wollensky steakhouse in Manhattan. Buffett told reporters beforehand that Duan was 'a first-class person'—by then Duan had already donated roughly US$40 million to charity.[s15] Among the guests Duan brought was the then 26-year-old Colin Huang (Huang Zheng), who was working at Google. Huang Zheng later recalled that everything Buffett said was 'common sense that even a mother could understand,' reinforcing the power of equanimity and common sense.[s18] Market lore holds that Duan returned from the lunch with three maxims: do not do what you do not understand, do not short-sell, and do not borrow money—disciplines he subsequently repeated throughout his investing career.[s17] The meal was also seen as a public affirmation of the Duan-Huang mentor-protégé relationship: Huang Zheng first connected with Duan in 2002 through Ding Lei's introduction; in 2004 he followed Duan's advice to join Google; in 2015 Duan was among the angel investors when Huang founded Pinduoduo.[s18][s19]

**Q5 (EN): What does Duan Yongping mean by 'benfen' and 'daring to be last'?**

A: Benfen is the core of Duan Yongping's business philosophy. His definition: 'Do the right things, and do things right.' Doing the right things is the 'Way' (dao)—it concerns direction and right versus wrong. Doing things right is the 'method' (shu)—it concerns execution and efficiency. If the direction is wrong, no amount of effort will help.[s11][s21] Equanimity (pingchangxin) means 'at all times, especially when tempted, to shut out external distractions, return to the starting point of the matter, and discern right from wrong.'[s11] He was influenced by Drucker's 'do the right things and do things right' while at university; in company discussions, the first question is always 'Is this the right thing to do?'[s11] From this derives the 'Stop Doing List': in operations—no OEM, no haggling, no credit sales, no late payments, no late wages, no attacking competitors; in investing—no short-selling, no borrowing, no investing in what you do not understand.[s11][s22][s23] 'Daring to be last in the world; striving to be first from behind' means: in product category, do not rush to guess demand—wait until demand is validated, then enter (doing the right thing); once inside, use superior product and channels to outperform (doing the thing right). BBK's VCD entry and OPPO's smartphone entry both followed this pattern of late entry and top-three finish.[s22][s43] His summary: 'People care about what we have done; in fact, the reason we became who we are is largely because of the things we chose not to do.'[s2][s11]

**Q6 (EN): What is the relationship between Duan Yongping, Colin Huang, and Pinduoduo?**

A: Their relationship is one of mentor and protege, blending personal friendship with business guidance. Colin Huang (Huang Zheng) graduated from Zhejiang University's Qiuzhen College in 2002 and went to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for a computer-science master's degree. Through Ding Lei's introduction, he met Duan Yongping, who lived nearby, and began assisting with investment matters while still a graduate student. In 2004, on Duan's advice, Huang turned down Microsoft, joined the then-unlisted Google, and stayed 'at least three years,' participating in the building of Google China. In 2006, Duan specifically brought the 26-year-old Huang to the Buffett charity lunch. Huang returned to China in 2007 to start businesses; Duan gave him a BBK e-commerce unit to build into Okooo.com and later supported his founding of Leqi E-commerce. In 2015, when Huang founded Pinduoduo, Duan Yongping, along with Ding Lei, Wang Wei, and Sun Tongyu, was an angel investor. Duan said he invested in Huang 'for personal reasons—he is my friend, I understand him and I trust him,' candidly adding that Pinduoduo was 'not an investment I made because I understood the business; it was one I made somewhat muddily'—what he trusted was the team and the culture. Huang has said: 'Among my angel investors, the one who has influenced me most is Duan Yongping. He continuously educates me to first do the right thing, and then do things right.' Pinduoduo's benfen culture derives directly from this teaching. In 2020-2021, Huang stepped down as Pinduoduo's CEO and then chairman around the age of forty—a trajectory strikingly parallel to Duan Yongping's own retirement at forty.[s3][s18][s19][s20][s43]

**Q7 (EN): What is Duan Yongping's investment philosophy? What stocks has he mainly held?**

A: His philosophy in one sentence: 'Buying a stock is buying a company'—meaning buying the discounted value of a company's future cash flows, not betting on stock-price movements.[s11][s23] Three methodological pillars: first, circle of competence—'if you don't understand it, don't do it'—the number of companies he is willing to bet heavily on can be counted on one hand; second, three elements—right business (good business model), right people (good corporate culture), right price (reasonable valuation)—the first two matter more than price; third, the Stop Doing List—no short-selling, no borrowing, no leverage, no short-term trading, no market prediction.[s8][s22][s21] His classic holdings include: NetEase (roughly US$2 million in 2002, hundred-fold return); UHAL (bought around US$3.50 in 2003); Apple (position built from approximately 2011, his largest U.S. holding for many years); Kweichow Moutai (held from approximately 2012, his A-share ballast stone); Tencent (accumulated during the 2018 downturn, considered a 'non-sale' holding); Pinduoduo (angel investment plus long-term holding); and Berkshire Hathaway. He once short-sold Baidu, losing roughly US$200 million—an experience that reinforced his 'never short-sell' discipline. Since 2006 he has shared investment views on Xueqiu under the handle 'Great Way Has No Shape, I Have Form'; in April 2025 he announced a temporary departure from the platform.[s1][s3][s8][s9][s14][s20][s21][s22][s23]

**Q8 (EN): What philanthropic donations has Duan Yongping made?**

A: Duan Yongping says 'investing is my hobby; charity is my work.' In 2005 he and his wife Liu Xin established the Enlight Foundation in the United States, focused on education. Major donations include: In September 2006, he and Ding Lei jointly donated US$40 million to Zhejiang University (Duan contributing US$30 million including US$10 million as a matching fund, Ding Lei contributing US$10 million)—then the largest single donation to a Chinese university, with US$10 million set up as a 'matching fund' to leverage additional social donations.[s29][s31] In 2007 he donated US$5 million to Nanchang Institute of Technology to build the Duan Ximing Library. In 2008 he donated US$3 million for Wenchuan earthquake relief.[s27][s1] In February 2010, the couple donated US$30 million to Renmin University of China, establishing a matching fund and the Xinping Self-Reliance Loan.[s24] In 2011 he established the Xinping loan program at Beijing Normal University; in November 2025 he donated an additional RMB 220 million to BNU.[s1] In 2022 he donated RMB 270 million to Zhejiang University; in 2024 he donated over RMB 1 billion to Zhejiang University and RMB 100 million in securities to CEIBS.[s28][s1] In October 2025 he donated 10,000 shares of Kweichow Moutai (market value approximately RMB 15 million) to Jiangxi Water Conservancy and Electric Power University to establish the 'Duan Ximing and Peng Jianhua Education Special Fund'; in May 2026 he donated another 10,000 shares of Moutai to Anfu County, Jiangxi, for a perpetual education fund—principal locked, only dividends spent.[s27][s26]

**Q9 (EN): What is Duan Yongping doing now? Why did he comment on the OPPO controversy in 2026?**

A: Since 2001 Duan Yongping has lived in California and long since stepped away from the daily operations of all BBK-family enterprises. He returns to China two or three times a year, spending most of his time with family, playing golf, reading, investing, and exchanging views with followers on Xueqiu under the handle 'Great Way Has No Shape, I Have Form.'[s43][s12] In January 2025 he returned to Zhejiang University for an alumni gathering and said his ultimate goal was 'to live a long time in good health'; that April he announced a temporary departure from Xueqiu, saying 'I'll come back when the language environment improves.'[s1][s20] In October-November 2025 he conducted a nearly two-hour on-record conversation with Xueqiu founder Fang Sanwen, systematically reviewing his investment career. In April 2026 he disclosed on Xueqiu that Colin Huang had 'reportedly gone to pursue a doctorate, mainly researching life sciences.'[s1][s11][s20]

On May 8, 2026, an OPPO Mother's Day marketing campaign—featuring the line 'My mom has two "husbands"...'—touched a nerve by offending public sensibilities around family ethics, drawing nationwide criticism. OPPO pulled the ad and apologized the same day. On May 9, Duan Yongping broke his long silence with a rare public statement on Xueqiu: 'That was indeed inappropriate. I see the company has already apologized and made changes. When you are wrong, you fix it. I believe they will reflect on this.' He added: 'The copy was still not appropriate.'[s32][s34] Subsequently the China Advertising Association publicly criticized the campaign; OPPO classified the incident as a major brand crisis, and the head of the China business unit, Duan Yaohui, was demoted two levels with salary frozen for thirty-six months.[s33][s34] This was Duan Yongping's first public comment on a specific OPPO matter in years, and was widely seen as a concentrated exposure of the tension between benfen culture and the traffic-driven marketing era.[s35][s34]

**Q10 (EN): What was Duan Yongping's early life like?**

A: Duan Yongping was born on March 10, 1961 in Nanchang, Jiangxi. His father, Duan Ximing, and his mother, Peng Jianhua, were teachers at the Jiangxi Water Conservancy and Electric Power College; the family's ancestral home was Taihe, Jiangxi. At age five, he followed his parents—who had been sent down during a political campaign—to the countryside in Anfu County at the foot of Jinggang Mountain, where he lived for five or six years: chopping firewood, transplanting rice, harvesting grain. His primary school was a multi-grade class. This difficult childhood he regards as the source of his willpower—'Starting a business is never as hard as carrying firewood.'[s25][s26][s2] He failed the gaokao in 1977; after half a year of intensive study he passed in 1978 and was admitted to Zhejiang University's Department of Radio Engineering. At university he read Drucker's 'do the right things and do things right,' which influenced him for life.[s2][s11] After graduating in 1982 he was assigned to the Beijing Electronic Tube Factory (state-owned Factory 774, Asia's largest electron-tube plant and predecessor of BOE), at a monthly salary of 46 yuan. Wang Dongsheng, who entered the factory the same year, later led Factory 774's restructuring into BOE. Unable to adapt to the state-factory culture of 'everyone thinks they're capable but nobody does anything,' he resigned after three years, entered Renmin University's graduate program in quantitative economics in 1986, and graduated in July 1988. In March 1989 he went south to Zhongshan, Guangdong, and took over the loss-making Rihua Electronics Factory under Yihua Group, launching the commercial journey that would produce Subor and BBK Electronics.[s45][s1][s6][s42][s44]
