Editorial Intro

Zhong Baoshen may be the least gambler-like gambler in China's PV industry. He doesn't chase trends, signs no long-term supply contracts, and never expands capacity blindly. He even calls himself 'conservative' and 'afraid of death.' Yet this self-proclaimed conservative bet against the industry on monosilicon when everyone chose multicrystalline, and on BC cells when everyone pursued TOPCon — two counter-cyclical bets, two wins.

Lead

Amid the photovoltaic industry's frenzy for multicrystalline silicon, he was the only one who swam against the current, betting on monocrystalline silicon. Nearly two decades later, monosilicon completely reshaped the industry. When everyone pivoted to TOPCon, he wagered on the overlooked BC cell. His name is Zhong Baoshen, Chairman of LONGi Green Energy. His creed: believe in the laws of physics, not market sentiment.

The Lanzhou Pact: From Dorm Book-Rental Boy to Magnetic Materials King

**English:** In the autumn of 1986, a young man from rural Henan walked into the physics department at Lanzhou University. His name was Zhong Baoshen — simply dressed, yet carrying a quiet confidence that belied his years. He had no idea then that this classroom would plant the first seeds of a future photovoltaic empire — not because of semiconductor physics in the textbooks, but because of the small businesses he ran in the dormitory building.

During his junior year, Zhong launched a distinctive book-rental business in the dormitory. The rules were simple: anyone willing to share their own books could freely borrow others’; those unwilling had to pay. In today’s parlance, this was ‘sharing economy’ — except Zhong had figured it out three decades earlier. Each month he earned over 100 yuan, far exceeding an ordinary worker’s income. He then moved into thermos flasks: collecting discarded shells from graduating students, replacing the inner liners, and reselling them to freshmen at low prices. This was the embryo of ‘circular economy’ and the earliest manifestation of Zhong’s commercial genius.

But the most important harvest of Zhong’s four years at Lanzhou University was not business practice — it was a pact made with two classmates before the statue of the university’s late president, Jiang Longji. In the spring of 1990, as graduation approached, Zhong and his classmates Li Zhenguo and Li Chunan often strolled across campus discussing life plans. The three made a vow before Jiang Longji’s statue: when circumstances allowed, they would start a business together, and the company would be called ‘LONGi’ — named after their beloved president. This pact, reminiscent of the legendary Oath of the Peach Garden, would within thirty years completely rewrite the trajectory of the global PV industry.

After graduation, Zhong was assigned to Fushun, Liaoning — known as China’s ‘coal capital’ — to work at a rare-earth magnetic materials factory. Three years later, he boldly quit his secure job and launched his own venture. In 1993, he founded his first company in Fushun: Fushun LONGi Magnetic & Electric Equipment Co., Ltd., dedicated to R&D and development in magnetic material applications. Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, Zhong displayed extraordinary pragmatism. Once, he and a subordinate visited a small company for a business meeting and waited over an hour to see its general manager. The subordinate was furious, feeling humiliated. Zhong replied: ‘I don’t feel humiliated at all, because we achieved our purpose. No matter the size of the other company, we’re the ones seeking business — that’s simply how it is.’

This extreme pragmatism helped Shenyang LONGi rise rapidly in its niche magnetic materials segment. By 2004, the company had become a global leader in its field, with annual sales reaching 500 million yuan. The scale was there, yet Zhong increasingly sensed the industry’s limitations: ‘The scale is sufficient, but the ceiling is too low. There’s not much room for imagination.’ He began searching for a larger battlefield — one that would reveal itself through a transoceanic phone call.

The Transoceanic Call: A Phone Call That Changed the PV Landscape

**English:** In early 2006, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Zhong Baoshen stood on the observation deck of the famous Petronas Twin Towers, gazing down at the tropical metropolis illuminated by night lights. At that moment, a transoceanic phone call interrupted his thoughts. On the other end was his old classmate Li Zhenguo, his voice barely concealing excitement: I want to buy some second-hand monocrystalline furnaces overseas. What do you think about the prospects of the PV industry?

This phone call would later prove to be the pivotal moment that reshaped the entire photovoltaic industry. Li Zhenguo had been struggling in the monocrystalline silicon sector for over a decade. From his 1990 assignment to Huashan Semiconductor Materials Factory in Huaxian, Shaanxi, to his 1992 resignation inspired by Deng Xiaoping's Southern Tour, to founding Xi'an Xinmeng Electronic Technology Co. in 2000, the predecessor of LONGi Green Energy, Li had never left monocrystalline silicon. But he knew his limitations: deeply engaged in R&D and production, with sharp technical instincts, he was less skilled in corporate strategy, organizational architecture, and modern enterprise management.

Li's lone-wolf decision-making approach had caused him pain. In 2003, LONGi's predecessor planned to export two container-loads, fourteen tonnes total, of polysilicon to a European client at fifteen dollars per kilogram, totalling two million dollars. For a company only three years old, this was a massive deal. Yet after delivery, the client demanded a return, claiming technical specifications fell short. Due to inexperience with overseas customs and shipping, the cargo was not returned to a domestic port until May 2004. Miraculously, the moment the containers docked, before the packaging was even opened, another Chinese PV company snapped them up at three times the original price: six million dollars.

This brush with disaster fundamentally transformed Li Zhenguo's management philosophy. He realised that a company cannot be run by one person's decisions alone. You can do ninety-nine things right, but one big mistake and the enterprise is finished. He began searching for a complementary partner, someone who understood management, had commercial instincts, and made decisive calls. He thought of Zhong Baoshen.

After returning to China, the two met face to face, discussing the PV industry's present and future with growing excitement. The industry stood at a subtle turning point: following Germany's 2004 Renewable Energy Act amendment, European nations were heavily subsidising PV, and the sector was booming. Yet the overwhelming majority of companies had chosen the multicrystalline route with its lower technical barriers and shorter construction cycles, while only a handful still adhered to monocrystalline silicon.

Zhong made a life-altering decision: he resigned as general manager of Shenyang LONGi and travelled to Xi'an to join Li's team as chairman, while Li became president. Neither man bargained over personal gain; their shared obsession with doing one thing well for a lifetime formed the bedrock of their partnership. Li later publicly acknowledged this generosity of spirit: he pushed Zhong into the chairman's seat while he himself took the president's role. This was no simple transfer of power, but rather two science-trained entrepreneurs applying their most elemental understanding of professional division of labour.

From that phone call atop the Petronas Twin Towers, the destinies of the Lanzhou Three finally converged. An entrepreneurial epic of counter-cyclical bets and technological conviction had just begun.

Against the Current: Betting on Monosilicon Amid the Multicrystalline Frenzy

**English:** In 2006, China's PV industry was gripped by unprecedented fervour. Stimulated by generous subsidy schemes in Germany and other European nations, global PV installation demand exploded, and Chinese manufacturers flooded in. The vast majority of companies, including future industry giants Suntech, Yingli, Trina, and LDK, chose the multicrystalline technology route. The logic was simple: multicrystalline offered lower production costs, shorter construction cycles, and lower technical barriers, perfectly fitting the fast-money ethos of the era.

Amid this multicrystalline frenzy, Zhong Baoshen, freshly arrived at LONGi, and Li Zhenguo made a decision that baffled the entire industry: go all-in on monocrystalline silicon.

This was, at the time, a seemingly irrational choice. Multicrystalline held absolute mainstream dominance; monocrystalline was universally dismissed as expensive, slow, and uneconomical. The industry consensus held that monocrystalline belonged in laboratories, not in mass commercialisation. But Zhong and Li's reasoning operated on an entirely different logic.

The essence of the PV industry is continuously lowering the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated, Zhong later recalled. Monocrystalline silicon was expensive and slow to build at the time, but it offered higher conversion efficiency. More importantly, in the long run, monocrystalline costs would inevitably fall, making it the lowest-cost solution per unit of electricity generated. This judgment was not based on intuition but on the physics of first principles. Monocrystalline silicon's crystal structure is more regular, its electron mobility higher, and its theoretical conversion efficiency ceiling far exceeds that of multicrystalline. This meant that if the cost problem could be solved, monocrystalline's efficiency advantage would become irreversible.

But that if seemed impossibly distant given the technology of the day. Monocrystalline ingot-pulling costs remained high, wafer-slicing losses were severe, and the entire supply chain was immature. For seven full years, from 2006 to 2013, LONGi endured ridicule from every direction. Competitors mocked them as mono fanatics; investors questioned their choice of track; even internal teams occasionally wavered.

Zhong weathered it all with two words: steady management. He devised a distinctive operational strategy: don't chase trends, don't sign long-term contracts, don't expand capacity recklessly. In 2008, solar-grade polysilicon prices surged from twenty-eight dollars per kilogram to a hundred dollars. Many PV giants signed long-term supply agreements with overseas silicon producers to lock in capacity. Zhong insisted on purchasing only in the spot market, judging that such irrational price spikes were unsustainable. Indeed, after 2009, polysilicon prices collapsed; by 2013 they had plunged to just over ten dollars per kilogram. Companies that had signed long-term contracts were crushed, while LONGi, though not entirely unscathed, at least avoided fatal damage.

That time, Zhong's conservatism saved LONGi.

Beyond his prudent operational strategy, LONGi never reduced its R&D investment in monocrystalline technology. Even in the most difficult years, Zhong ensured that a significant proportion of profits went toward improving monocrystalline processes: optimising ingot-pulling techniques, upgrading slicing technology, advancing equipment localisation. Each improvement quietly narrowed the cost gap between mono and multi.

In 2013, the turning point finally arrived. LONGi's monocrystalline wafer production and sales rose to number one globally. The industry began to realise: the mono fanatics mocked for seven years had won their bet. Even more striking, that year LONGi's non-silicon cost for mono wafers dropped 6.9 percent year-on-year; the dual engines of economies of scale and technological progress were beginning to show.

Seven years of counter-cyclical perseverance, from 2006 to 2013, completely rewrote the industry landscape. Zhong demonstrated a simple truth: in technology-driven industries, the ultimate winner is never the one who runs fastest, but the one whose direction is most correct.

The Diamond Wire Revolution: A Technological War That Upended Industry Costs

**English:** If choosing monocrystalline silicon was Zhong Baoshen's first counter-cyclical gamble, then introducing diamond wire cutting technology was his second revolution — one that fundamentally restructured the cost base of the entire PV industry.

Before 2014, the entire PV industry relied on a traditional technique called slurry cutting — using silicon carbide slurry on steel wires to grind silicon ingots into thin wafers. This method was inefficient, wasteful of materials, and environmentally harmful, but it was the industry standard that everyone took for granted.

LONGi's technical team had keenly identified as early as 2009 that diamond wire cutting — using high-speed steel wires embedded with diamond particles — was the future direction. Diamond wire cutting operated four to five times faster than slurry cutting, yielded 15 to 20 percent more wafers, and dramatically reduced environmental pollution. But the problem was stark: diamond wire consumables were prohibitively expensive, priced at roughly 0.4 to 0.5 US dollars per metre, about three yuan in Chinese currency. Moreover, the technology was monopolised by Japanese manufacturers; Chinese companies had virtually no access.

Zhong decided to crack this hard nut. He personally visited Japan's largest diamond wire manufacturer, hoping to acquire technology or purchase products. Instead, the Japanese side's attitude left an indelible mark on him. During business negotiations, the Japanese company displayed profound contempt for Chinese enterprises — they would not even sell the product, fearing that LONGi's technical capabilities at the time would produce downstream products that could damage Japan's industry reputation.

That arrogance deeply stung Zhong's sense of national pride. Afterwards, he made two decisions: first, LONGi would master diamond wire cutting technology and achieve domestic substitution; second, even if it meant short-term losses, LONGi would cultivate a domestic diamond wire supply chain.

This was a decision requiring enormous courage. At the time, China's diamond wire supply chain was almost entirely blank — from the wire itself to the cutting fluid and cutting machines, everything had to be built from scratch. LONGi had to proactively procure equipment and products from domestic suppliers, maintaining patience for their technical development. In this process, the company even suffered profit losses, but without doing so, suppliers could not be nurtured, and the company could not reduce costs quickly. It was mutually reinforcing, as Zhong explained.

To ease the team's concerns, Zhong made a critical commitment: the wafer division could operate at annual losses of up to 40 million yuan while promoting diamond wire technology. Forty million yuan — this was LONGi's maximum tolerable annual loss at the time. The figure was not arbitrary; it was calculated precisely as a safety floor.

The R&D process was far from smooth. According to the technical director at the time, actual production yield rates once fell below 80 percent. Wafers cut by diamond wire cost over 10 percent more than conventional wafers. With losses added in, at this rate, the company would lose tens of millions per year with no end in sight.

Yet the breakthrough came faster than anyone expected. In less than six months, diamond wire cutting reached breakeven. Cost reductions exceeded all projections. As the domestic diamond wire supply chain rapidly matured, costs plummeted. By 2014, LONGi became the first company in the industry to fully transition to diamond wire cutting. That year, its wafer gross margin ended years of decline, reaching 17.49 percent — up 5.5 percentage points year-on-year.

The diamond wire revolution's impact extended far beyond LONGi itself. Professional institutions estimated that after full adoption of diamond wire slicing, China's entire PV industry could save approximately 12 billion yuan annually. More importantly, diamond wire domestication completely shattered the Japanese monopoly, returning pricing power to Chinese companies.

By 2017, diamond wire cutting had achieved full industry adoption. Those who had once mocked LONGi for betting wrong finally understood: Zhong Baoshen had not been betting on a single technology — he had been betting on a fundamental restructuring of the industry's cost architecture. Over eight years, he transformed a core consumable monopolised by foreign companies into a core competitive advantage for Chinese enterprises.

Wafer King: From a Ten-Person Workshop to Global PV Leadership

**English:** The year 2014 marked a watershed in LONGi Green Energy's development. That year, the company made a bold decision: to acquire an 85 percent stake in Zhejiang Lepv Photovoltaic Technology Co., Ltd., formally entering the cell and module business. This meant LONGi was no longer content to be merely an upstream wafer supplier — it would integrate the entire value chain from wafers to cells to modules.

The logic behind this decision again stemmed from Zhong Baoshen's philosophy of steady management. He understood well that although monocrystalline wafer cost advantages had been established, if they could not be translated into end-product competitiveness, LONGi would forever remain a raw material supplier, lacking leverage in the value chain. Entering the module business meant LONGi could directly face end customers, proving the superiority of the monocrystalline route through product quality.

After the acquisition, LONGi rapidly demonstrated extraordinary integration capabilities. Lepv became LONGi's core platform for its module business. Leveraging upstream monocrystalline wafer cost and technology advantages, module product efficiency and market competitiveness quickly improved. That very year, LONGi achieved the number one global ranking in monocrystalline cell module shipments.

Over the following years, LONGi entered a period of rapid expansion. In 2018, the company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange with stock code 601012. After listing, LONGi surged forward like an unleashed dragon, exerting force across every segment of the PV value chain. The wafer business maintained its global number one position, while module shipments climbed year after year. By 2021, LONGi's wafer shipments reached 70 gigawatts and module shipments hit 38.5 gigawatts, both ranking first globally.

2022 was LONGi's peak year. Annual revenue surpassed the 100 billion yuan milestone for the first time, reaching 129 billion yuan, with year-on-year growth exceeding 60 percent. Net profit attributable to shareholders reached 14.8 billion yuan, setting a historical record. Operating cash flow hit 24.4 billion yuan. That year, LONGi maintained its dual global number one positions in both wafers and modules. Even more振奋ing for the industry, in November 2022, LONGi's independently developed silicon heterojunction cell achieved a conversion efficiency of 26.81 percent, setting a new world record for monocrystalline silicon solar cell efficiency.

In terms of market capitalisation, LONGi climbed steadily between 2020 and 2021, briefly surpassing 540 billion yuan, becoming the undisputed leader of China's PV industry. In December 2020, LONGi's market cap first exceeded 300 billion yuan, just over a year after breaking 100 billion in August 2019. When interviewed by Economic Daily that year, Zhong Baoshen uttered the now widely quoted phrase: In business, you must focus — do one thing and do it to perfection.

Yet peaks often mark the beginning of turning points. Even as LONGi surged forward, the supply-demand dynamics of the PV industry were quietly undergoing fundamental change. In 2023, prices across the value chain collapsed — polysilicon fell 70 percent, wafers 60 percent, modules 50 percent. Although LONGi's revenue held at roughly 129.5 billion yuan, net profit plunged from 14.8 billion to 10.75 billion, with the company recording its first-ever quarterly loss in Q4. Asset impairment provisions reached approximately 7 billion yuan as PERC technology lines began their obsolescence.

Zhong Baoshen keenly sensed the approaching crisis. But this time, the threat came not from a single competitor but from structural oversupply across the entire industry. An unprecedented winter was closing in on LONGi.

### 6. BC豪赌：当所有人都在做TOPCon时 / The BC Gamble: When Everyone Was Doing TOPCon

**English:** When the PV industry entered deep adjustment in 2023, every company faced a critical technology decision: what to bet on next? The mainstream answer was nearly unanimous — TOPCon cell technology. Longi's rivals such as JinkoSolar, Trina, and JA Solar all poured tens of billions in capital into TOPCon capacity, creating an industry-wide frenzy.

But Zhong Baoshen made a judgment that shocked the market: TOPCon is a transitional technology.

In 2022, Zhong publicly expressed this view for the first time. He believed TOPCon's lifecycle might be significantly shorter than PERC's, and that rapid large-scale capacity expansion in a short period would lead to intense homogenisation and substantial investment risk. This was no baseless claim. As early as 2021, LONGi had launched TOPCon products, but when building factories, the company identified the risks above and chose a different path — BC cell technology.

BC, or back-contact cell technology, is a fifty-year-old concept. Its core feature is that both positive and negative electrodes are located on the rear, with no metal grid lines on the front to block sunlight, thus maximising light absorption. Theoretically, BC cells come closest to the theoretical efficiency limit of monocrystalline silicon cells. But BC technology's manufacturing process is extremely complex and difficult to industrialise, which is why it developed slowly over the past two decades.

LONGi began laying out BC technology R&D as early as 2017. By 2022, based on its independently developed HPBC (Hybrid Passivated Back Contact) technology, LONGi launched a new generation of module products. In May 2024, LONGi's self-developed heterojunction back-contact cell achieved an efficiency of 27.30 percent, setting a new world record for monocrystalline silicon PV cell efficiency. In April 2025, certified by Germany's Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH), LONGi's HIBC cell efficiency reached 27.81 percent, yet another record.

However, betting on BC meant diverging from the entire industry. While competitors rapidly expanded TOPCon capacity at gigawatt scale, LONGi's initial BC capacity was relatively limited. The market reacted sharply. Investors questioned: had LONGi misjudged? Was Zhong Baoshen too conservative to follow the mainstream?

Zhong did not argue. At the 2024 semi-annual results briefing, he said: Looking back at PV's many years of development, whenever product efficiency improves significantly, these high-efficiency products face little pressure in adoption. We are very confident in the future of our BC products.

Data began to validate his judgment. By the end of 2025, LONGi's cumulative global BC module shipments approached 100 gigawatts. HPBC 2.0 products accounted for over 60 percent of total module shipments in Q1 2026. More critically, BC modules could command a premium of roughly 10 percent over TOPCon, with even higher premiums in the distributed market. By end of 2025, LONGi held 510 BC-related patent authorisations, including 330 invention patents, building a full-chain technology moat spanning wafers, cells, and modules.

By 2026, virtually every major PV company had begun deploying BC products. JinkoSolar, JA Solar, Tongwei and others launched BC products or announced BC capacity plans. Professor Shen Wenzhong, director of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Solar Energy Institute, predicted that within five to eight years, BC cell market share could rise from the current 10 percent to 50 percent. Zhong's contrarian bet was being vindicated by time.

But the price of that foresight was steep. During those two years when the industry went mad for TOPCon expansion, LONGi chose a different path — and consequently bore enormous financial pressure.

The Industry Winter: The Most Difficult Year Since Listing

**English:** For LONGi Green Energy and Zhong Baoshen, 2024 was the most difficult year since the company's listing.

That year, the PV industry's overcapacity crisis erupted in full force. After years of frantic expansion, supply-demand imbalance plagued the entire value chain. Module prices collapsed from just over one yuan per watt in early 2023 to below 0.7 yuan by mid-year; polysilicon prices fell below most producers' cost lines. Irrational low-price competition swept the industry, pushing virtually every company to the brink of losses.

LONGi's financial data was alarming. Full-year revenue fell 36.2 percent to 82.58 billion yuan. Net profit attributable to shareholders posted a loss of 8.618 billion yuan — LONGi's first annual loss in nearly a decade, compared with a 10.75 billion yuan profit the previous year. Gross margin stood at just 7.44 percent, with wafer margin plunging to negative 14.31 percent — meaning every yuan of wafer sold lost 0.14 yuan. More severely, the company recorded 8.7 billion yuan in asset impairment losses, primarily from inventory write-downs and capacity impairments driven by PERC technology obsolescence.

Zhong Baoshen stated candidly at the annual results briefing: This was the most difficult year since listing, with severe net losses. The management team and I feel deep pain and have conducted thorough reflection. He attributed part of the losses to the accumulation of strategic missteps, displaying a rare posture of self-examination.

Yet even in the most difficult moment, Zhong did not alter his core strategy. Facing industry-wide price wars, he proposed a strategy of controlling volume to preserve margins — willingly reducing shipments rather than participating in vicious competition below cost. He judged that the long-term zero-margin state of mainstream products was unsustainable, and that the industry would rationalise prices through elimination of excess capacity.

On the technology front, Zhong not only held firm but doubled down. In the second half of 2024, LONGi announced a 3.2 billion yuan investment in a 12.5 gigawatt high-efficiency BC cell project in Xixian New Area, while advancing a 46 gigawatt silicon ingot slicing and 30 gigawatt cell project in Ordos. Against a backdrop of consecutive massive losses, this counter-cyclical expansion was viewed by many investors as irrational. But Zhong's logic was clear: when the industry eliminates backward capacity, the scarcity of advanced capacity actually increases. BC technology, as a next-generation platform technology, would hold absolute advantage when the industry recovered.

In 2025, LONGi continued to lose 6.42 billion yuan, but losses narrowed by roughly 25 percent compared to the prior year. BC module sales reached 2.287 gigawatts, with HPBC 2.0 capacity ramping up rapidly. Operating cash flow turned positive at 4.36 billion yuan, signalling substantive operational improvement.

In May 2025, LONGi announced a major management change: founder Li Zhenguo resigned as director, general manager, and legal representative, focusing on R&D and technology management. Zhong Baoshen assumed the concurrent roles of general manager and legal representative. The market interpreted this as LONGi strengthening strategic execution capability during the industry winter — Zhong would fully oversee operations and strategy implementation while Li Zhenguo focused on what he does best: technology R&D.

By end of 2025, LONGi's market capitalisation had shrunk from a peak of 540 billion yuan to roughly 126.5 billion yuan, evaporating over 410 billion. The stock price fell from a historical high of 73.2 yuan to below 17 yuan. Seven hundred thousand shareholders were trapped. Zhong himself received only 7,100 yuan in total compensation for 2025; management collectively took an 18.5 percent pay cut.

Facing investor anxiety and scepticism, Zhong systematically outlined LONGi's five-year development path at the May 2026 annual shareholder meeting: stabilise the core business with BC technology, build energy storage as a second growth curve, target rebuilding another LONGi within five years, and ultimately transform into a comprehensive energy services company driven by PV-plus-storage technology. He judged that the most difficult phase for the PV industry and for BC products had passed.

These words recalled similar statements he made in 2013. Back then, LONGi had just glimpsed daylight at the end of its seven-year monocrystalline marathon. Now LONGi was replaying that story on the BC technology track.

The Philosopher of Prudence: Conservatism, Caution, and Long-Termism

**English:** Zhong Baoshen has often used two words to describe himself in public: conservative and afraid of death. This is not false modesty — it is a carefully considered self-positioning. In an entrepreneurial culture that glorifies risk-taking, wolf-like aggression, and going all-in, Zhong's conservatism seems out of place. Yet it is precisely this conservatism that has served as the core code enabling LONGi to navigate multiple industry cycles.

Steady management is what Zhong repeatedly emphasises as the foundation of survival. He elevates prudence to the level of corporate strategy: always maintain financial health, never allow the company to face a major crisis. This philosophy permeates every detail of LONGi's operations.

In 2008, when polysilicon prices surged from twenty-eight dollars per kilogram to a hundred dollars, the entire industry was scrambling to buy silicon. Giants signed long-term supply agreements to lock in capacity. Zhong insisted on purchasing only in the spot market. His logic was simple: such prices seriously deviated from value and were unsustainable. Sure enough, after 2009, polysilicon prices collapsed. Companies that had signed long-term contracts — including former PV giants like REC and MEMC — were dragged into the abyss by沉重的 long-term obligations. LONGi not only survived the crisis unscathed but took the opportunity to purchase large quantities of raw materials at low prices, stockpiling ammunition for subsequent expansion.

Don't expand capacity unless you lead — this is another iron rule Zhong established for LONGi. In the capital-intensive PV industry, capacity expansion is nearly an instinctive impulse for every company. But Zhong insisted: only when technology is truly ahead and costs are genuinely competitive does a company earn the right to expand. This principle was vividly demonstrated during the diamond wire technology rollout: even as the entire industry used slurry cutting, LONGi did not rush to expand. Instead, it waited until diamond wire technology truly matured and costs genuinely fell before making the full switch.

The other side of this conservatism is extreme commitment to technological innovation. Zhong's conservatism never meant under-investment — quite the opposite. His R&D decisions were often bolder than anyone else's. In 2017, when BC cell technology was still just a laboratory concept, LONGi began large-scale R&D investment. By end of 2025, LONGi's cumulative R&D spending exceeded 28.5 billion yuan, with R&D intensity maintained above 6 percent. The company had obtained 3,690 authorised patents of various types, building a full-chain technology moat spanning wafers, cells, modules, and PV-plus-storage systems.

Zhong's management style likewise reflects his conservative philosophy. He advocates simple interpersonal relationships and an egalitarian work atmosphere, enabling everyone to focus their energy on work. At the company, gifts between colleagues cannot exceed 200 yuan in value; if superiors and subordinates dine together, the superior must pay. He believes that hierarchically authoritarian companies stifle innovation. To boost creative vitality, one must respect employees' ideas and wishes. This egalitarian communication style helps the company avoid risks and prevents management from making erroneous decisions through tunnel vision or autocratic rule.

In May 2026, at the annual shareholders' meeting, Zhong set an ambitious target: rebuild another LONGi within five years, achieving over 50 billion yuan in storage energy sales. He frankly acknowledged this target was extremely challenging but not impossible. His logic: energy storage is not an addition to LONGi's business portfolio — it is a multiplier that elevates customer value. LONGi's existing PV customers can naturally convert to storage energy users, while Jingkong Energy's twelve years of technical accumulation in storage provides product competitiveness.

From conservative to bold, from steady to aggressive — these seemingly contradictory facets achieve a remarkable unity in Zhong Baoshen. His conservatism reflects reverence for risk and respect for common sense; his boldness reflects conviction in technological direction and commitment to long-term value. This paradoxical unity is precisely the core capability of a counter-cyclical strategist: more conservative than anyone when conservatism is called for, more bold than anyone when boldness is required.

The Counter-Cyclical Legacy: Believing in Physics, Not Market Sentiment

**English:** Over more than twenty years of the PV industry's dramatic ups and downs, Zhong Baoshen accomplished something nearly impossible: two counter-cyclical bets, two victories. The first was in 2006, betting on monocrystalline silicon when the entire industry chased multicrystalline; the second in 2022, betting on BC cells when the whole sector pivoted to TOPCon. Sixteen years separated these two bets, yet both were threaded by the same logical throughline: believe in the laws of physics, not market sentiment.

This conviction was not innate — it was forged through countless tests at the edge of survival. From the batch of polysilicon nearly returned in 2003, Zhong deeply realised that a company cannot entrust its fate to luck. Do ninety-nine things right, but get one thing wrong, and you may face ruin. This reverence for risk became the underlying code of all his subsequent decisions.

The story of the Lanzhou Three is one of the most moving chapters in Chinese entrepreneurial spirit. Li Zhenguo, Zhong Baoshen, Li Chunan — three young men from Henan who met in Lanzhou University's physics department, swore an entrepreneurial oath before Jiang Longji's statue, and over the following thirty-plus years transformed a company with 500,000 yuan in registered capital into a PV empire with annual revenue exceeding 100 billion yuan and a market capitalisation that once reached 540 billion. At its core, this story is not about individual heroism but a collectivist entrepreneurial spirit: not bargaining over personal gain, pursuing one thing to perfection, and using the power of the team rather than individual genius to confront uncertainty.

What Zhong Baoshen has left this industry is not merely the LONGi company and BC technology, but a template for decision-making philosophy. Over twenty years, he proved one thing: in technology-driven industries, the greatest business vision is not predicting the next trend but having the courage to persist in what you believe is right when everyone else opposes it.

The essence of the PV industry is lowering the cost per kilowatt-hour, and the fundamental path to that goal is technological innovation. This is the common sense Zhong has repeatedly emphasised. But common sense is often the most easily overlooked thing amid market noise. When multicrystalline swept the industry with its low-cost advantage, common sense was ignored; when diamond wire cutting attracted a few with its high-efficiency promise, common sense was ignored; when BC cells quietly awaited their moment with their theoretical basis of highest conversion efficiency, common sense was again ignored. Each time, Zhong Baoshen was the one who picked up common sense.

In 2026, the PV industry stands at the threshold of a new technological revolution. BC technology's market share is climbing rapidly; energy storage is becoming LONGi's second growth curve. Zhong's target of rebuilding another LONGi within five years is both a summation of the past and a declaration of war on the future.

In LONGi's corporate mission lies this phrase: Harness the sunlight, create a green energy world. These twelve words condense the entire conviction of Zhong Baoshen's twenty-year entrepreneurial journey. Sunlight is free, but converting light into electricity requires technology, patience, and belief. Zhong's life has demonstrated: true entrepreneurial spirit is not chasing every trend, but walking the right path to its very end.

When people look back on China's PV industry two decades hence, Zhong Baoshen's name will be inseparably linked with two keywords: monocrystalline silicon and BC cells. These two terms represent two counter-current strategic choices and two victories of the same conviction: believe in the laws of physics, not market sentiment. This is the strategic fortitude of a counter-cyclical technology bettor — an extraordinary ability to remain silent amid the noise, gather strength in silence, and change the world when that strength matures.

Editorial Conclusion

Zhong Baoshen's story is one about belief. Believing that the laws of physics trump market sentiment, that long-termism beats short-term arbitrage, that steady management trumps aggressive expansion. In an industry full of speculative entrepreneurs, he spent twenty years proving that the greatest business vision is not predicting the next trend, but having the courage to persist in what you believe is right when everyone else opposes it.

**Q1 (EN): Why did Zhong Baoshen give up his successful career at Shenyang LONGi to join the PV industry?**

A: By 2004, Shenyang LONGi had become a global leader in its niche with 500M yuan revenue, but Zhong felt the industry ceiling was too low. After receiving a transoceanic call from classmate Li Zhenguo in 2006, the two met and determined PV was a larger battlefield, so he resigned and joined.

**Q2 (EN): Why did LONGi bet on monocrystalline silicon when the entire industry chose multicrystalline?**

A: Zhong and Li judged based on first principles of physics: monocrystalline's more regular crystal structure meant higher theoretical efficiency ceiling, and costs would inevitably fall, making it the lowest cost per kWh. This judgment was proven entirely correct seven years later.

**Q3 (EN): How was the domestication of diamond wire cutting technology achieved?**

A: After being rejected by Japanese manufacturers, Zhong decided to independently develop and cultivate domestic supply chains. He allowed wafer plants to lose up to 40M yuan annually promoting the technology while purchasing from domestic suppliers to help them grow. Breakeven was reached in under six months, ultimately breaking the Japanese monopoly and saving the industry 12B yuan annually.

**Q4 (EN): Why did Zhong Baoshen call TOPCon a transitional technology?**

A: He believed TOPCon's lifecycle might be significantly shorter than PERC, and rapid large-scale expansion would lead to intense homogenisation with substantial investment risk. Evidence proved him right: TOPCon product prices collapsed in 2023-2024, with multiple projects terminated.

**Q5 (EN): Why did LONGi expand BC capacity against the trend despite losing 8.6B yuan in 2024?**

A: Zhong's logic: when the industry eliminates backward capacity, the scarcity of advanced capacity actually increases. BC technology, as a next-gen platform, would hold absolute advantage upon recovery. Meanwhile, BC modules can command roughly 10% price premiums, offering stronger profitability potential.

**Q6 (EN): What are the characteristics of Zhong Baoshen's management style?**

A: He calls himself conservative and cautious, emphasizing steady management as the foundation of survival. He advocates simple interpersonal relationships and egalitarian atmosphere — colleague gifts capped at 200 yuan. He insists on the iron rule of not expanding unless leading, plus strategies of not chasing trends, signing no long-term contracts, and avoiding blind expansion.

**Q7 (EN): What is LONGi's strategic direction going forward?**

A: At the 2026 shareholders' meeting, Zhong set the goal of rebuilding another LONGi in five years: stabilising PV fundamentals with BC technology, building energy storage as a second growth curve to over 50B yuan scale, ultimately transforming into a comprehensive energy services company driven by PV-plus-storage technology.
